- There are plenty of fish in the sea so you dont have to waste time on someone whose not feeling
- But people's opinion can change and over time after countless exposure and experiences with one another theirs no telling what could happen.
I always thought this about the backup quarterback, except you actually get snaps when your team is on the good end of a blowout (Unless your starter gets hurt of course)

In terms of a genuine relationship it shouldn't have to be either or, I wouldn't even consider it wearing someone down as opposed to a friendship just evolving. And either way no one should be ignoring other potential partners for an uncertain reward as you called it any way.
Now in terms of sex (How I really define the Friendzone anyway), I dont care if she wants the pipe from jump or a year from now, I'm still going to want to give her the pipe. But that doesn't mean I'm missing other pipe opportunities because someone who I want smash ain't willing just yet.
