Sad thing is, that's not just in Asia, but here too.

There's skin whiteners or "lighteners" right here too...especially in the urban/ethnic stores.

It's beyond ridiculous.

Yup... worked in india for two months over the summer, a couple maids there used to put lemon juice on their skin because it apparently made skin whiterovertime, and they couldnt afford the actual products being sold

that being said... i never saw ad's like this

.... but at the same time people who are lighter skinned may goto tanning salons and sit under machines anddo spray on stuff just to look a bit darker... not the same though obviously..

Apparently this is pretty big in Korea, cause my sister was telling me about this when she was over there earlier this year.

Well, in Asia it's a cultural thing.

If you were rich, you didn't have to work outside in the fields, and you had lighter skin.

If you were a peasant worker, you worked outside in the sun and were much tanner.

That has trickled down to today, and that's why you still see old asian women wearing those ridiculous visors that cover their entire faces.

Interesting.

This is also happening where I reside in Africa.
Sad situation.

Sometimes I won't see someone for a few months and I am in awe at how quickly it changed their skin.

There are many bad side effects to this.
It's mostly women.

its not the actual product that's racist. its the idea behind wanting to be lighter skinned that has racist undertones to it.

for me they are basically saying that darker skin=ugly. lighter skin=attractive.

I completely agree with this. I'm not sure about other people, but I for one find lighter skinned black women more attractive than darkerskinned black women. That's not to say that there aren't exceptions to the rule, but I cannot recall the last time I saw I dark skinned black womanthat I truly found attractive.
