Costco Racist? vol. Munkeees

A Costco store in North Carolina has pulled a doll from its shelves, according to media reports, because of concerns it could be considered racist.

According to the Fox news station in the Greensboro, N.C., area, the "Cuddle with Me" baby doll had a black version with monkeys and wearing a hat that says "Lil' Monkey," and a white version with pandas and wearing a hat that says "Pretty Panda."

The doll was never offered for sale in Costco's Harrisburg-area store in Lower Paxton Township. A store employee there said the dolls were received in the store's shipping room, but never reached the floor because the store was notified about the problem before they went on display.

Costco's Web site offers just the "Panda" version of the doll, in three different skin tones.

I'm just saying, somebody over-reacted. I see the point, but I don't think there was any racial motiviation here. Monkeys are cute, and I have acouple of friends who use "monkey" as a nickname for thier young kids. Racism can never go away if everyone is contstantly looking for something orsomeone to label as "racist." Maybe its the times, but I just feel that the race card is pulled WAAAAAY too often, and for minor issues. Its likepeople forgot what actual racism is.

Seriously.

Whoever thought this was an appropriate doll to market/make/sell needs to be dismissed from employment.

The doll isn't overly offensive or bad. But the relationship between monkeys and blacks should not be a point of marketing or sale, especially in achildren's toy. Regardless of whether or not it was intended to be racially charged or not. People will not be able to see past what is physically there.

Instances/Items like this need to be avoided period.

come on man whether it was done intentional or not. too much money goes into marketing, product management for this to even hit stores. everyonein their right minds knows the history behind calling a black person a monkey.

and why call the doll lil monkey as in the baby is the big monkey? why not call the panda lil panda? im all for people sucking it up and stop complaining aboutrace but this is clearly misjudgement.

why not give the white doll a orcha and call it pale whale. thats cute right?

The doll in question is nowhere to be found on the Costo website.
The manufacturer tried to hit Harrisburg with that "Cuddle Me Racism" quickstrike.
