First thing to consider--the doctors replaced the patient's Bone marrow with that of someone who has a mutation that makes them immune to the HIV. Thatmutation is most likely due to the fact that the donor lacks the CCR5--AND--CXCR-4 CD-4 cell membrane receptors. HIV requires these receptors to enter yourCD-4 cells--which is where the damage begins because as HIV proliferates, your CD-4 cell titer goes down, allowing for a gang of normally innocuousopportunistic infections/pathogens to go buck wild in you--this is the onset of AIDS. The problem is that, very very veryfew individuals in the world have this CCR5--AND--CXCR-4 mutation that would confer resistance to HIV. Even more significant is the fact that themutation occurs primarily in people of European descent--specifically those in Central--Western Europe.
Second thing to consider--bone marrow transplant is a very tedious process because the match must be perfect or else youjust subjected the patient to a systematic whole body immunological attack. This patient must have been very very lucky (and rich) considering theyfound a perfect match for him. And not only that, a bone marrow match who was null for CCR5--AND--CXCR-4 receptor expression. Crazy odds.
So think about it. To say they have found a "cure" for HIV would be stupid and very unprofessional as well as scientifically misleading on theirpart. There are about 42 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. Every year, there are about 5 million newinfections. Its not possible to find bone marrow matches for the many people. This is just the natural evolutionary workings of the Immune system. Andeven in against those magnificent odds, you found a bone marrow match for all those people, whose to say all the bone marrow donors would be positive for theCCR5--AND--CXCR-4 mutation. Its just highly improbable.
Now factor in the amount of money that would be needed to fund such a project. We live in a selfish/greedy world.Non of these countries that can do anything about HIV, will do anything about it because no one gives a damn about theBlack Continent--where HIV/AIDS is widespread. I say this because I'm from that continent--i was born there and I'm cognizant of how the WesternWorld views us--even though their wealth is a direct result of plundering us.
