This commercial isn't saying Google invented video chat, that this girl's difficulties leaving home for the first time is THE most important problem in the world, or that we need to rely on technology for every facet of our lives. It's a single example of how far we've come and that nearly every computer and high end smartphone are equipped with the ability to video chat.. and that we can communicate so easily with one another that seemed impossible in the past. If you're going off to college, relocated because of work, out of the country, if you're away from family, friends, and loved ones, away from your husband or wife or kids, it's literally a few clicks on the computer and you can be chatting with them face to face. That is awesome. Substitute a young woman having difficulty in a new environment without her mother for anything else and it's the same message.
It's like that Louis CK bit.. everything is amazing and nobody is happy. This is really cool technology and can improve our ability to communicate with one another... and it's incredibly simple and convenient as well. That's the point.
