A lot of districts are back to school today but most are not and some teachers say they will stay for the month and even are in violation of their contract to do so

I don't know if anyone else is following this, obviously I live here so it's closer to home for me, in fact literally I live a stone's throw away from the Capitol where they're gathering.

If I can get to a computer I'll post some graphics and videos of what our schools look like and the rampant corruption from the top that plagues our state.

Since we're losing teachers at such a high rate and nobody good is going to stay and do it for 28k, they are giving emergency teacher certifications, started you had to have just any 4yr degree, now it's pretty much anyone who will do it

It's always a fight to get state funding for things liie schools and such but they just passed 800Ms to build 2 prisons

Governor Fallin owns stake in the private prison industry

We're #2 in incarcerations (#1 for female), #50 in teacher pay, #48 to 50 in education depending on which study, # 15 in politician pay (170k + special interest [oil] money)

Oklahoma is the most Red voting state in the nation, only one Barrack didn't win not even 1 county either year.

Teachers havent received a raise in 10 yrs, average salary is $28,000 and most have 2nd and even 3rd jobs. Legislators gave them a $6,000 raise (they asked for 10), but they are also fighting for better funding, smaller class sizes, overall teaching conditions. Most literally are payibg for supplies out of their own pockets

The 10 largest state agencies, by statute, are literally NOT SUBJECT TO AUDIT

Every year, nearly a Billion dollars, yes with a B, this year it was over 800Ms, comes us just missing from the budget , "missappropriated" is the term they use. So they cut school funding, mental health , DHS, etc.

Lottery and tribal Casino money that was supposed to fund education never does. We were sold a bad bill of goods on that. They take the $ from the lotterg, subtract it from the education fund, take the supplanted education money and put it in general, and it disappears and/or goes to other project

Sad to see this but in reality Oklahoma is a backwards state that for decades relied on keeping people dumb. The state overwhelmingly votes for a PARTY and not for benefits. You have low income people cheering for breaks the RICH are getting, how does that make any sense? Now they see the public officials THEY voted for actually have no interest in what benefits them. Surprised? Lol.

They tried to pay off the teachers with a laughable raise but that didn’t work. They hide it behind the buzz word of “largest raise in years” but you’re throwing that on top of one of the lowest salaries in America and at one point THE lowest (for educators).

I don’t think this ends ANY TIME SOON.

Yea my neice and nephew go to school in a district that has from trailers to 400k houses and they stopped giving them homework because they can't afford printer ink.

Oh and the averagd superintendant pay is well over 150k here

Exactly , "they." Older people keep dying off though, maybe we'll go blue soon enough.

And she wonder why we can't get other sports and big companies or events here. Amazon was probably like lol yea right, although they do have a shipping center.

We building the **** out of some hotels though

Similar to the fast food workers striving for money, I hope the teachers get it.

Trump/GOP voters in a nutshell.

I'm beyond proud to see the teachers come together and show the government that the KIDS, HOURLY WORKERS & themselves deserve WAY better than what they are currently getting. I don't think some of you realize what the movement is all about. I live in Oklahoma and this is a pretty big deal for the state but also an eye opener for other parts of the nation.

Shout out to all of you coming into this thread just to bash Oklahoma for some NT likes...

My mom's a teacher and from what I understand this isn't just a Oklahoma problem. Most buy their own supplies.

I hope these OK teachers get better pay. Dealing with these kids aint easy.

This is not an eye opener. Teachers being underpaid has been well known since forever. Also black and brown folks for the longest have been complaining about our schools being **** and underfunded.

Yea it's kind of a nationwide issue, vital public employees and services getting the shaft in favor of business interests and the rich getting taxcuts. Figured it would devolve into derp derp you live in Oklahoma comments though.

Teachers were leaving to TX when I was in high school (Lawton is barely 30 minutes to the border) but not at the rate they are now. And the schools weren't anywhere near this bad. In fact at one point I think Ike was top 15 public school in the nation

And these same districts right now that can't afford books have nfl grade lookin *** football stadiums. Tx does this too

Real sympathy for any minority that is unfortunate enough to be stuck there. "Thoughts and prayers" for everyone else.

I’m surprised you haven’t changed your font color since it’s white.

This isn’t about the under pay. The state has annually taken away from things like education while gifting more tax breaks to the big companies. It’s at the point where they’re cutting programs from the bottom to give way to more of the bottom while giving the top more. There’s nothing left to cut at this point without it being too noticeable. It just so happens the education groups are standing up against it.

Yeah yeah “**** Oklahoma” we all heard it, BUT this is just a sample of what America has become and the fight that is finally taking place. Conservatives (whatever you want to call them) are finally receiving the backlash from their own group that in the past votes for them and backs them no matter what.

With that said I’m not giving Oklahoma a pass at ALL. This was their own doing but as a positive if one of the most backward states can turn any place can.

They need to invest in education more nationwide. Make college free. Give teachers and students free resources like pens, paper, books. Keeping people uneducated makes those who are corrupt stay in power.

Can't say I give a **** about Oklahoma.

So you're gonna say you don't give a sh** about Oklahoma (schools/teachers) but you do care about the "black and brown folks schools"... Hmmmm...
