Lebron doesn't have the killer instinct... he's a great athlete, probably better than MJ and Kobe... but that's about it.
MJ > Kobe.... for right now... if Kobe gets 6+ than the conversation changes.

my question is     what does it matter?

make a list, hell have jesus christ rank his top 5   ok now what?

if we can all somehow agree on one player as the best ever what does it even matter in your life?  in his life?

pointless argument.

All of which is very possible then the greatest player debate is going to be a very competitive & intense debate.
that would make Kobe probably top 3 all-time, but there would still be a clear gap between him and Jordan. do you not realize that MJ also won 5 regular season MVPs? as well as a DPOY? and that statistically, MJ is the greatest scorer to ever play in the league (#1 in career PPG)?

Kobe just doesn't have a chance at matching those achievements, even if he does do the things you listed above.

Kobe's not touching Mike ever.

Though I guess there could be an argument that he could have a better career (potentially more rings and all time scoring title).

It's comments like these that show how much nut riding Jordan gets on this board.

I get it, he's the GOAT, but Kobe's career isn't even over yet, and we don't know what else he's going to achieve.

How are you going to compare the two and draw a final, end all- be all conclusion from a man whose career is in full swing.

Because I'm old enough to know and have witnessed what Michael Jordan has done. I hate Michael Jordan for what he did to the Lakers in 91, but as a basketball fan, if you cannot respect what that man has done for the game of basketball, then you don't deserve to watch the game.

Heck, as a Laker fan, Kobe isn't even the best Laker, yet...

He wins 5, he has an argument.

In my opinion, there's the 3 Kings:

Magic and Bird saved the NBA. Jordan just took that to another level.

Kobe is a product of those 3 Hall of Famers.
That's fair. But like I said, Kobe's career isn't over. He's en route for another ring this year and if this core stays together then he'll be a contender once again next year.

The point is, I'd rather save that discussion for when we have all the facts laid out on the table. In the meantime, all we can do is give Jordan his due, and understand that KB is still building his resume.

The only thing that's undeniable is the fact that KB is getting closer and closer every year.

...and for the record, I'm well aware of what MJ did to magic and our LA crew in 91.

edit: I'm just going to throw a wrench into the discussion. I was having a talk with my buddy during game 1 of the Finals, and we were talking about this very topic. How much do you think Jordan's legacy is owed to the fact that he was a pioneer, rather than his amazing basketball ability.

A pioneer with the rise of Media, sponsorships, Nike, the Internet meaning that he just happened to be playing the greatest basketball player ever in the right time, and benefited from all of that.

Serious question.
This.

That is a very great question.

In my opinion, his legacy, in strictly basketball terms, is 100% skill, dominance, and how he revolutionized the 2 guard position. The timing in regards to marketing by Nike and the culture going on in the late 80s into the 90s was just icing on the cake.

Yeah also people who are old enough to remember Jordan in his prime when he was winning championships with the Bulls also the whole media coverage back then was different and not as bad it was today. No TMZ, Twitter, facebook, internet. Where the media nowadays are on people 24/7 look to vilify and tear down athletes like we all see today. There was also like an un written rule where people in the media didn't dare write or publish anything bad about Jordan.

People like Sam Smith who wrote the book the Jordan Rules which bashed and wrote about Jordan's short comings as a person and the bad side of him basically got black balled after that.

Back then it was mainly Sports Illustrated & ESPN the 2 biggest sports coverage.

Kobe is a better 3 point shooter, better high post player, has a better shot, better leadership, more determination, better free throw shooter, more awareness, higher basketball IQ, better shot in traffic, better ball handler, better at finding a shot, and definitely a better closer..

Add all this together Kobe > Lebron

And your argument about rings does matter BUT.... It is not the reason why he is better... It is like the 10th part of the reason he is better...

I.e. look at Charles Barkley his legacy/rank gets pushed down because he has no rings... So Robert Horry's 6 pushes him up... As does Kobe having 4 pushes his legacy up... more so than Horry's because Kobe had a much bigger role..

And if you are comparing 2 head to head players... Championships is most definitely a category you need to compare...But it is not a huge weight until both players are gone and retired then it means a great deal.

that's because one is a willing passer, the other isnt. one demands a trade, one trusts his teammates 100% of the time.

i'm not sure if skill makes you the best...gasol is more skilled than dwight, so are you guys saying gasol is better?

One has a major strength in scoring... the other has a major strength in passing, (doing the opposite hurts their teams respectfully)
One wants to win and was pissed the team hadnt fulfilled their promise to build a championship contender, thus asking for a trade, to a team that can win championships
the other, strong armed his team's management into making trades and signing free agents that HE wants, and then he eventually will leave them this summer......

and yes Gasol is better than Dwight Howard.... (was that a legitimate question or were you just hypothetically speaking?)

The one with the major strength in passing also has a major strength in scoring too. When Lebron scores, he doesnt hurt his team, he helps them because they NEED him to. Kobe wants to win so he asked for a trade...... but wasn't he teammates with Shaq and then Kobe wanted to be "the man"???

How did Lebron strong arm his team's management? Lebron has been with the team for 7 years, what moves have they made that made you think "he can be a #2 to Lebron and help him win a championship". (getting a bum from Milwaukee that scores 17 points a game, can't defend or pass does not count).

You really think Gasol is better than Howard? Howard doesnt have offensive game, but that guy can turn any franchise into a winner and a contender. If you started a franchise you got #1 Lebron, #2 Howard... Gasol will never be a franchise player. So having more skill DOESNT mean youre better

People need to stop saying Kobe is a better 3 pt shooter. Lebron shoots more 3s at a higher %

 He nailed it

They got plenty of chumps with rings while Hall of Famers have none, example: Patrick Ewing, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, Pete Maravich, Allen Iverson, etc. While you got guys like Will Purdue, Kurt Rambis, Darko Milicic who aren't woth jack with rings

Kobe's problem with Shaq was he came into the season out of shape and waited to the playoffs to turn it up (similar to Rasheed Wallace, Also Phil Jackson complained about Shaq's pre-season conditioning) Kobe wanted to be the #1 while Shaq played #2, because it was obvious who was getting better and who was gettign worse.... Shaq even admitted that he let his ego block him from seeing that point, as he played the same role to D Wade in Miami and won a ring.   and also it wasnt Kobe that got Shaq out of LA, it was Buss.... and in the long run, he was right... look at Shaq now and look at what we have because of the Shaq trade (Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol, Jordan Farmar, Shannon Brown, Adam Morrison)

Lebron had his hand in EVERY trade or free agent signing in Cleveland...the Cavs are so scared of Lebron leaving that they made GM moves to "Make him happy" Lebron WANTED Antwan Jamison, he Wanted Moe Williams, he WANTED them to sign Varejo back (Horrible contract) he wanted them to get Shaq, Lebron was playing Co-GM....

Dwight Howard & Pau Gasol, there is no comparison who is the BETTER player.
Basketball is a team sport of some sorts, so the player you start your franchise with determines the pieces you put around him, which is why Dwight's Teams are winning, the have ALL OFFENSE around him, to make up for his lack of O-game,

just pure asking.... who is a better BASKETBALL PLAYER  Gasol >>>>>> Howard, & Kobe > Lebron
just off pure basketball skill, and just being able to play the GAME, all the other variables are trivial.... the bare basic is who is a better player...

so how did mikes name end up in a thread that isnt about him?

someone says kobe is better than bron but then someone says but kobe will never be better than mj...its like c'mon everyone knows mike is greater than both

what im saying is kobe and bron are creating their own legacy and let them do what they do

anyways OP dont ever use rings as an argument...like others have pointed out hes a better cause he leads by example, defined game, individual defender, killer instinct and he is the best closer today

IMO bron is the best player in the game but kobe is more skilled

--I aint takin anything away from Bron.
--But he is better at pregame dancing, daps to teammates and imaginary camera pics.

So who's ego got in the way if Kobe was the one that wanted to be #1? It doesnt matter if Shaq was declining, if i remember correctly, Shaq was dominating against the Pistons in the Finals and it was Kobe's ego that got in the way. The Pistons Finals matchup was one championship Kobe cost them, and it's arguable that they wouldve won at least 2 IF Kobe didn't want to be the #1 guy. Kobe has won 1-2 championships since being the #1 on a team, but it took some luck getting Gasol. You can say the trade worked out well, but the Lakers are just trying to win back championships that they wouldve won if Kobe wanted to stay as #2 to Shaq. Buss got Shaq out of LA probably because Kobe wanted to be #1. Kobe was pissed at the team for not getting better players, but he is the one that wanted to win ON HIS TERMS. He wanted help, but he had to be the man.

Maybe Lebron was apart of the decision making, but don't most franchise players have a say in that? The Cavs didn't make enough moves. You can't deny that they have ONE great player playing alongside him in his 7 years. Demanding a trade is strong arming your team's management.

Gasol is more skilled, but NOT a better basketball player. 100/100 times a GM takes Dwight over Gasol. Wouldnt you think the GMs want the better basketball player? In the Olympics, i would rather have Gasol, hell even Bosh instead of Dwight. But in the NBA, Dwight makes a bigger difference on teams, so he's the better player. It's easier to build around Dwight than it is to Gasol.

I think Kobe is the best player in the league. He's more skilled, more mature and more mentally tougher than Lebron.

This is coming from a Cavs fan. One cannot deny how remarkable Kobe is playing right now.

He has a fracture in his finger on his shooting hand. I think that quite effects his shot this season.

Irrelevant you are talking about better 3 point shooter... I think the whole career makes a damn difference

And it further proves my point  Kobe in his career has shot 1,485 more 3's (obviously because he's played longer) but still 1.1% better.

2009-2010 season
Lebron 33.3%
Kobe 32.9%

2010 playoffs
Lebron - 40%
Kobe- 40.7%

2008-2009 season
Kobe- 35.1%
Lebron- 34.4%

2009 playoffs
Kobe- 34.9%
Lebron- 33.3%

I rest my case
