I come to you with an issue. Today I went to the ATT store to get a sim and to hopefully begin a plan cus I just got an iphone. Now, there's always prepaid, but I want to start building teh credits. Anyways, I go in there, dude is taking my info, it's gravy, I'm getting ready to diddy bop out the store with my swagged out sim,  when he hits me with "You're gonna have to make a $500 deposit" I went from

 in a matter of seconds cus I'm poor man. I don't have 500 bucks with me, I got bills to pay. I wished Ja Rule would have walked in there right then and there, but nobody got Ja Rule, so it just felt worse. Now, are they supposed to run a credit check on you? I was talking to my uncle about this and he said that didn't make any sense. He said that some of his illegal friends open up a 2 year contract with them and they didn't run squat. Just gave them the phone and the fee and whatever else. NT, I love you so much, and I'd appreciate it if you could enlighten me on this issue. Is it possible to buy a sim online and activate it once I receive it? Why am I being asked for credit? don't clown me, I think about you everyday.

No, not if you buy a phone outright. 

Since you're buying subsidized phone, they would like some insurance that you will not bail out of your contract.  You're also a postpaid customer, meaning you pay your bill to AT&T after you've used their service.
