Key Disney Parks Executive Exits Amid Lackluster Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Attendance

Catherine Powell, president of Disney Parks Western Region, is leaving the company after more than a decade.

Powell oversaw Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Disneyland Paris, but her position is being eliminated, Bloomberg reported Monday. The heads of each resort will now report to Bob Chapek, chairman of Disney’s Parks, Experiences and Products division.

A 15-year veteran of the company, Powell oversaw the openings of two Star Wars-themed attractions this year.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened at Disneyland in Anaheim on May 29. A second attraction opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios park in Orlando, Florida, in August

As Deadline reported in August, attendance declined at Disney’s domestic theme parks by 3% in the quarter. Management blamed the drop in visitors on waiting out the rush for the massively-hyped Galaxy’s Edge. The company also “managed demand for the first few weeks in order to maintain a high level of guest satisfaction,” CFO Christine McCarthy said at the time.

Disney’s third-quarter results announced in August fell short of Wall Street analysts’ estimates. Earnings per share came in at $1.35, which was below the expected $1.74. Total revenue of $20.2 billion undershot the consensus estimate for $21.4 billion. The company blamed its ongoing integration of 21st Century Fox assets acquired in a $71.3 billion deal that closed in March.

Disney Gets Serious About Saving "Star Wars" Land

The media giant is kicking off a six-day media blitz across most of its broadcast and cable television properties, hoping to breathe new life into Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney World and the original Disneyland theme park.

"Do or do not," Yoda famously says in The Empire Strikes Back. "There is no try." With the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge expansion at both of Disney's (NYSE:DIS) stateside theme park resorts falling into the "do not" camp these days, the entertainment giant is rolling out a promotional blitz on its own cable and media network properties to promote the new Star Wars-themed lands.

The media blitz kicks off on Tuesday with a promotional spot on ABC's Live with Kelly and Ryan in the morning and black-ish at night. The cadence will pick up on Thursday with Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge being promoted on several ABC shows including Good Morning America, The View, and Nightline. Several of the network's primetime shows including Modern Family and Dancing with the Stars will follow throughout the next few days with nighttime plugs for the 14-acre expansion that opened at Disneyland in late May and Disney World three months later.

It's not just ABC that is getting the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge takeover. Neil Patrick Harris will host a two-hour primetime special on Freeform, promoting the new land in a celebrity-stacked presentation. Disney Channel will run segments featuring some of its stars building droids, drinking blue milk, and checking out the only ride currently available where folks fly the Millennium Falcon. Even ESPN is inexplicably getting in on the action, airing a segment during SportsCenter on Saturday morning with some of its College GameDay commentators experiencing the new land.

Getting it right the second time around

The promotional push will feel heavy-handed, but it's pretty clear that Disney overplayed its hand with its initial low-key approach to opening Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. CEO Bob Iger may have been half-joking earlier this year in an earnings call when he said that all that Disney would have to do was tweet "its opening" to promote the launch of the new land that is nearly identical in both parks, but overconfidence did not serve the House of Mouse well here.

Price hikes, blocking access to many of its seasonal passholders, and failing to open the flagship Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance attraction on time have weighed on the expansion's lack of success. The Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run flight simulator ride has opened to mixed reviews. It also doesn't help that Star Wars purists have a laundry list of complaints ranging from where Disney has taken the franchise in the past few films to the decision to go with a largely unfamiliar setting for the theme of Galaxy's Edge. You can't please them all, but Disney is struggling to just please some of them these days.

Disneyland attendance actually declined in its most recent quarter despite the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and there are rumblings and anecdotal evidence that the fiscal fourth quarter that ends next week is also running a bit sluggish. Hurricane Dorian didn't help at Disney World, but it may just wind up being a convenient scapegoat. The galactic takeover of Disney's deep bench of networks is a desperate push for attention, likely a sign that vacation bookings through the next few months are running weaker than expected.

It's not too late. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has all the makings of a bar-raising attraction. Disney will find ways to stock more familiar characters and franchise storylines if that's what is needed to improve attendance trends. It's just as easy to reverse passholder blockout dates and promote discounted admissions to reverse its earlier overconfidence, especially if investors and park goers alike brace for a possible global recession. Nothing is permanent -- including failure -- when you control so many juicy media assets.

They built a Star Wars themed mall...Said it before and I’ll keep saying it...Modern day Toontown...Fun to look at but really nothing to do...

RothR might pick things up but whoever thought they should cut things down so much from the original plans, or to take it further, whoever decided on their ultimate plans for ALL their Star Wars decisions after acquisition; deserves to be fired...IF that was Catherine Powell (on the theme park side) then good riddance, IF she’s just a scapegoat then that’s unfortunate...Somebody has made awful decision after awful decision when it relates to the IP...

i do think they put too much stock into star wars fandom and star wars themed mall is pretty accurate, i am surprised they do not charge extra to ride the millenium falcon

but talking to some friends and family who wasn't old enough to watch the OGs, they really do not care much for it, even the disneyland fans

its a small sample size but they can relate more with marvel films and more excited about marvel land and that land is maybe a quarter of the SWGEs space but already looks like it has 10x more things to do with shows, interactions, attractions, etc...

spiderman ride, spiderman possibly swinging on the building, doc strange show, hero interactions (known and popular heroes, sorry but rey and kylo are technically only a few years old while marvel has 80yr old heroes that are even more popular today than before), stunt show on top of the avengers show building (before it opens up a year later), etc... and there are no entry fee (like having to pay to build a droid or lightsaber)

SWGE to this day really has rey and storm troopers walking around...

i do think its worth it to take a look but the past few visits, ive really only passed by it and even less desire to ride the ONE and ONLY ride they have because chances are id be sitting in the back watching bad pilots determining the outcomes... i really do enjoy star tours more... got to ride it 4 times this past sunday and got four different versions and i got to say that they should deploy more transport 22s as they are OP, one scenario has it destroying 2-3 tie fighters off the gates before speeding off and then destroying an ATAT from TLJ while safely transporting their passengers

Bless their little hearts, they're trying soo hard. Its not the fact that people dont think its gonna be cool, its more than that, seems like theyre just avoiding the main issues. Why would they think whoever is home watching whatever "gma" is would be their saviors? They started screwing with passholders, and im sure theres data they have that shows them this. We used to feel appreciated to be passholders!

exactly! you can’t mess with the cash cow and then be mad there’s no milk

annual passers are their bread and butter, at least at disneyland (i think it’s different at DW). they got greedy and it’s biting them in the ***. and i’m glad it is

i guess they got to make up the difference somewhere and if they cant control the crowds... theyll control the prices...

Disney names new leadership for Disneyland and Walt Disney World
  • Disneyland Resort will be overseen by Rebecca Campbell, who most recently was president of Europe, Middle East and Africa for the company’s direct-to-consumer and international segment.
  • Walt Disney World Resort will be overseen by Josh D’Amaro, who previously was president of Disneyland Resorts.
  • Campbell and D’Amaro will assume their new roles starting in November.
  • The Disneyland Paris duties will be handed off to Michael Colglazier, who leads Disney parks and resorts in Asia.

Three weeks for us. Im excited about the Halloween party this year, more than ive been in a while. Doesnt seem like its getting negative pub, just seems like theyre drawing attention to it to help boost ticket sales. Its a great way to do so, as long as you combine it with another aspect of incentives, such as a discounted ticket cost, or something along those lines.

Anyone do character dining?
Trying to line some stuff up for the family. Since my son won't be riding as much. Deciding between Donald duck PCH grill, goofy's kitchen or Storytellers cafe with mickey.
