Growing up, I lived in a 2500 sq ft house. Not including the basement, garage and backyard sitting on a half acre. So fast forward to 2019...I get my own apartment. Its not a studio or efficiency, but coming from where I come from it definitely feels like it. I only brought half my collection (85 pairs or so), and managed to fill up all the racks/cabinet space in my closet. I don't really have many clothes, but keeping Winter Coats around in the Summertime and vice versa seemed kind of redundant. Also my weight tends to flucuate 5 pounds up and down so I keep a wardrobe in both a size bigger and smaller.

I also collect alot of books/magazines (many of which are out of print/not available digitally yet) and couldn't throw them out, I had about 20 boxes of em that were taking up alot of space.

So a couple months ago, I set up a 5x10 storage unit. I'm paying about 40 bucks a month, and its indoor/climate controlled. Probably about 8 separate units in my hallway and I've only bumped into 1 person in the whole 5 months I've paid for it.

I generally go there about twice a week, sometimes i just need to retrieve something like a birth certificateor medical records for job related stuff. Other times I go there for nostalgia purposes, just to reminisce on the good old days. Yeearbooks and such.and read a couple . Everytime i go, it feels like a vacation.

How about you guys?

I don’t have one reason why is I’m looking for a office storage unit combo but where im from I haven’t found any luck. Like yourself I’m a collector as well but I think it makes more sense if your selling off pieces here & there to make costs like a storage unit more sensible.

Ive considered renting one and putting workout equipment in there. Not sure how it would work exactly or if someone would report me or what

As long as you don't do anything flagrant, like running extension cords from the outlets into your Unit, or bump Trap/Drill music outrageously loud...i dont see the harm. You got fools doing automotive work spilling all sorts of oils and fluids.

Hell, you could live in there pretty much without issue. A 20x20 goes for $200. The hours at most places are generally 6AM-10PM, the 24/7 places are generally only about 20-30 bucks more expensive.

I had the idea of paying for stuff monthly, but I'm currently in escrow to buy a property, don't have enough space in my current living situation. Took some 3 month starter deal @40$/month, but I'll pay full price starting January and will plan to move around February if all goes accordingly.

I've always told myself that if I need a storage unit, I'm overdoing it.

Also, I don't trust storage units, I've heard stories of units getting robbed or flooded. I'm good on that.

This summer I was paving a lot in a storage spot. Hella people were living in there.

one lady passed out on our trailer.

felt bad for a family with a baby living in one.

I used to. Right now, lots of stuff is at my parents' house so technically kind of. Like you, I moved from a 3br 3 car garage 1700 sq ft house to an apartment that was 900 sq ft when I first moved up here. I'm back in a house again though and missing some of the stuff I sold, especially all my home workout equipment. I had an elliptical, full squat rack, VKR, treadmill, plyo box, etc.

You have valuable sneakers, but other than that, people who just keep junk to keep it and end up paying more than the value of the items inside, just to store them, or everything in the attic except the Christmas tree, is mostly wasteful imo.

Get insurance on those shoes and put them up high on a shelf in there or something

I used to move ALOT. I can put my whole life in half a uhaul.

my wife on the other hand...

i hate hoarding **** i dont need honestly.

ill sell my things before i keep them in storage
usually make a donation drop off every so often just to rid myself of stuff

I know you be sucking your teeth when she asks you to pick up or drop something off
I got one that the whole family uses. I sell off what I don’t need so there’s always some space.

my homegirl runs a storage spot...cubesmart. she says every month there are auctions to sell whatever people left in their storage that people never come back for.
i feel like if you are willing to put in a storage for a substantial amount of time, then you really don't need it.

I had to get one a few years back when I moved out of my apt and in with a co- worker. After about 1 year, I rented a van from Uhaul and took everything out. Wasn’t much. Brought it back to the house and just sorted through it. Wish I would have done it sooner.

Never knew that was a thing.

Are the auctions publicly announced? How would someoneNOT in the know be aware of when those are happening?

Man I’ve made that threat so many times to my sister and my mother. So much clothes that they know they’ll never wear  :smh:

They’ll wait for me to finish my rant and then politely ask “so can you drop these bags over later? K thanx”.
