Don't Honor Veterans ?

I was watching this movie, and although it seems messed up it actually makes some sense. A scene from The Americanization of Emily, a WWII movie, where thisguy tries to make the claim NOT to honor veterans and the war dead because it causes more wars. What do you guys think??

Naw, I honor the people who had enough courage to put their life on the line.

There's been wars as long as there has been people, but you still acknowledge the ones that fight on your behalf.

And that's all regardless of the cause of the war.

i mean i had the same reaction, but if we could move beyond all the war pride..maybe we could honor the dead by not making the same mistakes?

I understand where this is coming from.
In History they tell you that you should study it to prevent repeating mistakes but we continue.

Yeah but its not the service men and women that are causing the wars. I will honor them because they are doing there part to protect our country. Its thepoeple sending them to war (Presidents, Polliticians, Country/World Leaders) that should not be honored.

Does it matter? The fact that the are means enough to me. Whether the war is just or not, I'm not gone sit here and +%+$ on the soldiers

who felt it important enough to fight in it. For example, after 9/11, this entire country was gunho and convinced that we needed to go to

war with Iraq. The war's approval rating was like 80% or something ridiculous. It wasn't until years later, we found out this war was based

on lies and mistruths....do we still decide not to honor the vets who fought in it?

Wait........I thought Osama bin Laden/ Taliban (you know...the people that they said attacked us) were in Afghanistan...why are you bringing up Iraq in thesame sentence as 9/11?

Take away veterans day? Do what they did when the troops came back from vietnam? Boo and mean mug anyone in fatigues?

America and the West in general in the early 21st century is a unique place to be. It is one of the only places that does not live under the threat ofannihilation or enslavement or conquest or subjugation at the hands of a foreign enemy. That is the rare exception to the almost universal rule of life.

Given the fact that most people who have lived have lived under threat of dangerous and powerful foes whose aim is your death or bondage, it makes sense thatthe state and warfare would go hand in hand and that martial virtues would be glorified, from the political leaders to the generals to the foot soldiers.

Despite the violence in the world today, terrorism, Western interventions in the Third World, civil wars in many of the "new" nations (those who havedecolonized less than a century ago), we live in the most peaceful time in history and if trends continue, we may fundamentally change how we view warfare andthe people who prosecute it. That is generations in the future and until such time, we should be glad that we can enjoy once undreamed of security because ofthat small minority that choose to make warfare its profession.

Everyone is forgetting that it takes two sides to war. "They fight for your freedom." Who are they fighting against? Other people who are fightingfor honor, pride, and their country/ideology.

I'm saying ... You got thousands of people dying, and they probably had no idea what they died for. Soldiers are like pawns to the people up top.
