Doug Collins

I'm not trying to hate but why is Doug Collins respected so much in the NBA? 
I mean he coached 8 seasons and in 6 of those season his team either missed the playoffs or lost in the first round. So what's so special about Doug Collins?

Also why do so many NBA players take his advice? Was it cause he coached Jordan?
I remember during the Olympics he talked to each player and told them what they need to do in order to win the gold.

He played what, 7+ seasons? Along with coaching. Plus he was a part of the screw job game against the Soviet's in the Olympics.....

I think he's living off reputation at this point, although he is a better coach then their current one (or fired).

Yup he's still in the club. We've seen it enough in the NBA over the years with the recycling.

Plus he spends a lot of time on TV which as we have seen in all sports makes you smarter to them and keeps you relevant.

let me just say that there may be no other personality in basketball that I respect more than Collins'. He is perhaps the only person to come closer to basketball immortality than this man yet continually misses out by the slimmest of margins. He was a terrific college player selected with the first overall pick. in his amateur career as an olympian he was robbed of a gold medal along with the rest of the 72 team with the controversial gold medal game. He was an all star with the 76ers before his career was cut short by injuries. He was a respected basketball personality anointed the responsibility of guiding jordan's mid-80s bulls to the chip but was fired one year before his assistant phil jackson took over and won 6 chips in eight years. He went on to join NBC's and TBS' "first" teams in broadcasting, frequently headlining NBC's game of the week. He also coached the pistons in the late 90's and coached in the 97 all star game. His son chris is an assistant for coach k's duke team and has subsequently "won" the gold medal that his father never did. Helluva player, helluva coach, helluva commentator. A hall of fame basketball mind. /thread

The only reason we are talking about Doug, is because he was brought on by TNT to do games, and he has famously mentioned he coached MJ, every possible chance he gets.
