THIS!

They need to bring back power ups where you can go from SSJ1 to SSJ4 instead of picking SSJ4 Goku at the menu

and go all the way to the GT saga!

Budokai 3 was the last legit DBZ game! The graphics moves and animation was on point and the story mode was too fun

Unlucky release date, bf3 out and soon mw3and skyrim.

I might get this near Christmas just for the character creation.

I didn't see this thread until today. Thank you. My 7 year old is a HUUUGE DBZ fan & has completed Raging Blast & Raging Blast 2. He can kick my butt with ease. He will love this game. Will def be picking this up.

I saw someone mentioned Burst Limit. My son & I saw this in the used section at Game Stop. Is this a decent game to play?

Anyone here pick it up yet? Thinking about splurging and grabbing it along with BF3 this weekend but I'd wanna hear a review or something first.
Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi Review
Dragon Ball Z returns to consoles with another high flying action fighter based on the anime/manga series. Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi looks to be the most authentic representation of the source material of any Dragon Ball Z title before it with new presentation, fully animated scenes from the anime and authentic bosses that fans have encountered in the show. Can Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi bring the fans what they have wanted all these years or is it just more of the same that players have been used to?

The story derives directly from the years of the anime/manga and the art style takes directly from the manga specifically. It allows for the look of drawn characters as well as detail that is more fleshed out than previous games in the franchise. The Story Mode switches off between major good guys in the anime as you fight pivotal battles in the series from Bardock to Piccolo and of course Goku. Throughout the fights however, various pre-determined scenes (using in game engine) will occur that will mimic the anime. It’s ultimate goal is to deliver an authentic story while keeping the player in the action and in the story. It can be frustrating at times that you usually aren’t the one doing the final blow to the enemies but it can be overlooked. Between fights you will be able to traverse the map via flying or via Gokus cloud. Once you unlock the radar you will see various points of interest, a tournament which is always going on and you can enter at your leisure, gold marks on the map are usually items or battles to fight for specific items/unlockables, blue is usually just a battle you can choose to fight and red stars are your main objective points. This radar/map layout carries into the Hero mode as well but more on that in a bit. Players will go toe to toe with boss type characters that are fifteen times the size of the player character, however the battles are primarily quick time affairs after learning the movements of the enemy and looking for openings to attack. Once their health is lowered, players will initiate a quick-time event to do various attacks and defeat them. The story is solid and of course will be familiar to hardcore fans but also reward to see them play out in game form with the original anime cutscenes every so often to show off key events. It is to be noted that it is recommended to play through the tutorial first to get used to the new elements of gameplay, the tutorial is made well and players whom are familiar with the series should have no problem getting used to new features.

Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi has taken a new direction with the HUD as well as added some new gameplay elements to keep things fresh for fans of the series.  The health will be represented by a Dragon Ball on the top left of the screen and below that is your Ki gauge that you can charge by pressing down on the d-pad and utilize for strike boosters, quick breakaways or defense reactions. To the right is the Spirit Gauge which will show arrows on the gauge to help you determine if you can do one of two supers or an ultimate move. Ultimate moves require the character to be in spirit high for the arrow to show up. After a few consecutive basic attacks with square or X (on Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 respectively) the game will go into a short timed sequence allowing you to choose to continue the combo with a rush attack (square/X) or a smash attack (triangle/Y), it can be a simple choice but however if the enemy guesses your attack he will be able to counter and start his own combo which creates room for strategy in this otherwise button mashing affair. During certain actions like what is essentially a flying type of attack where your character goes flying into the enemy you will have to choose to press the stick left or right, again if your enemy does the same they will negate the attack. Super attacks that enemies thrust upon you can be handled in one of three ways, Guard, Evade and Intercept when the attack is about to hit via a button press. Guarded mode simply has you press the circle/B button when the prompt arrives to slightly cut down the attack power of the super. Evade mode goes into a timed button press as bars reach the button (square/X). Timing is essential and if you manage to hit all three you will receive no damage. Finally there is the Intercept mode which is initiated by pressing triangle/Y and that basically has your player throw out an attack of their own to counteract the enemy and by rapidly pressing the intercept button and moving the bar in favor of your player you will win the contest and instead of taking damage, you will do damage to the opponent. There are a lot of great new features to the fighting mechanics of the game that allow for deeper level of play for hardcore fans.

New to the Dragon Ball game series is the character creation. Players can create a brand new male character (females are somehow absent) and name them as well as outfit them with the limited choices. Players can create one of three types of characters, Standard, which is the most balanced and is the most customizable as far as fighting style. Light, which specializes in blast range attacks and is the most talented with Ki and a limited range of attacks with Super moves. The Heavy type is powerful in melee range and is the most powerful of three in the melee range. Once a player is created they are thrown into the basic Dragon Ball Z story in a journey to capture all 7 Dragon Balls and restore the world the way it once was. Players can traverse the map freely and take on side battles and tournament as well as the story missions. There is also a training sequence that you can also utilize to choose a master and study under them to unlock new attire, super attacks, ultimate attacks, as well as hair colors and various customization options for your fighting sets as well as your character. Customized sets can be carried over to other modes such as online and battle mode (versus) as well. Every battle you fight (with the exception of training battles) you will slowly upgrade your characters traits such as health, attack power, defense and other statistics that will help them become a better fighter. Once you obtain the Dragon Radar you unlock a mini radar that shows you where hidden items such as attire, move sets and such are, battles are located and even where main story battles are located on your map so you can plan ahead instead of searching until something comes up. Players may find themselves fighting side battles to upgrade their stats so they don’t get too beaten up during story missions. Overall the new mode leaves a lot to be desired with the lack of a heavy set of customization options out of the bat, the only real customization is the hair and skin color. Other than that faces are very generic and when you take your hero online you may find a lot of look-alikes.

DBZUT_005-494x276.jpg

Just like previous entries in the Dragaon Ball series, players will be able to take the battle online against friends. There is the usual player and ranked matches, both can use the players created hero if they so choose. Skill sets can be used freely in ranked play. The World tournament mode is here again but not for ranked play sadly. As players progress in rankings they will unlock new titles that they can change, there are 100 titles to unlock and collect.

Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi has some great aspects but ultimately ends up being mediocre. The art style and the implementation of actual scenes from the anime is great. The gameplay changed to create a deeper play style but where are the characters? Raging Blast 2 had 100’s of characters. Ultimate Tenkaichi doesn’t come close to that number which is quite sad, even with the Saiyans. The terrain deformation makes a return and now it allows for super moves and ultimate moves to affect the battlefield as well, however even that is seemingly for show only as once the move is finished the battlefield somehow rebuilds itself. The somewhat lengthy story mode of 50 or so battles is great at roughly 8 hours and the hero mode is around 5 hours long (if you don’t spend time raising your stats) but it shutters in comparison to the previous entry’s galaxy mode which had over 100 battles. Hardcore fans will appreciate the attention to the manga and anime series but will be saddened by the lack of choices. The addition of boss type enemies is great and makes for interesting new gameplay but in the end this is another Dragon Ball Z title that adds some new aspects but takes away others and ends with a game with great fan service but only for the hardcore. In the end if you already own Raging Blast 2 you may want to pick this up if you are a diehard fan and need to create your own moderately interesting hero from a limited group of character customization options. However, it is best to give it a rent and experience the story of the Dragon Ball universe in game form which is simply the best part, the presentation.

Final Score: 3/5
