It seems a good number of NTers like to brag about their drug use so I thought I'd share how my day was yesterday.

My little brother just turned 28 three weeks ago. He has experimented with drugs, although mostly in his teens, however he does smoke regularly. About 3 years ago he became heavily addicted to pills. After nine or so months he went through a detox program and stayed clean for a couple of years. In the past couple months he has popped a pill or two here and there.

I got a call from my mom yesterday that he was standing around talking with our uncle and grandpa when he suddenly collapsed and went into a grand mal seizure. He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where, after becoming somewhat coherent, he was questioned about normal things, who the president was - he didn't know, what he had for breakfast - to which his answer was "Cleveland", who my mom was - whom he did not recognize. After about 45 mins his long term memory began to come back but he was adamant he had to get home because he was missing football. He thought it was Sunday. They eventually inquired about his medical and drug history . He told them the truth. He also informed them that two night prior he had taken a few ibuprofen for pain caused by his diverticulitis and also a Xanax to sleep. The following day -Monday- he said he was having bouts of confusing and dizziness and then had the seizure yesterday. After doing blood work, which came back clean, and a CT scan it was determined that the combination of previous damage done from all the pills years ago in conjunction with the ibuprofen/ Xanax mix induced the seizure. He was told it is more likely than not anytime he ingests any pills other than over the counter from here on the same results will occur.

Anyway, I'm not to lecture but no one ever thinks this could be them. My brother never considered damage he was doing because there was never any noticeable consequences until yesterday and now he has to worry for the rest of his life. I live 2100 miles away from my family and that phone call yesterday was the worst I have ever received. I don't wish this on anyone. I'm pretty certain this won't stop any of you from doing what you do. It's just something that hopefully those of you who like to brag and think all the **** you're putting into your bodies is cool will at least think about.

I too have a brother who battles with substance abuse. In and out of jail, but his family is always here for him and I pray everyday for him to recover. I've never done drugs, or care to do drugs because this reason.

:{ perscription medication is no joke, alot of people I know take perscription drugs on the regular thinking its a less harmful than street drugs. What they dont know is than after a long period of time its harder to get off of it because of the withdrawal symptoms.

Sorry to hear. Thanks for sharing that story.

I've never taken any drugs because I've seen what it can do to a family first hand (not immediate family but close relatives).

I've been in the game for a long time, usually getting clean and relapsing
Insanity = doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.....that's my life story since 9th grade.

But this lifestyle makes quality of life doodoo.
So I'm gone tommorow to handle what I got to handle.
Just wanted to thank you for the topic because I know that this is a serious matter, and I think this could be a very good thread depending how people react

Prescription meds can do alot of damage when nothing taken as advised. They bring comfort but that feeling can become addicting over time. The addiction can change your body chemistry and when that happens everyday becomes a battle.

I debated if I should make the thread because I know what the maturity and troll level can on here be but addiction is no joke. I was a drug counselor at one point in my life, I was married to an addict and I have a brother who's an addict. It's hard as hell to get clean, I know that. It's equally as hard for the people who love the addict, between co-dependency and just waiting for that call to say something bad has happened. Addiction makes for a ****** existence for everyone on both ends of the spectrum.

I really wish you the best. Coping skills are essential. Focus on you and do whatever you need to get well. Don't put it off until tomorrow if you can start today.

Niiketalk can have a mature intelligent conversation when it wants too.

Very few things outside of a HIGHLY clean drug free environment and strong reason/will power will kept someone clean once they get past a certain point. Sadly you can get eyes on them 24/7 to make sure they are clean. Just hope & pray.

I wish more people took this seriously, they always want to when it's too late smh. :{

Prescription pills are no joke as many have said.

I smoke regularly but doing anything else regularly is where I draw my line. I know there is the urge to do something if you like it enough but I feel like im at a point in my life where I know what to do and what not to do.

I've tried Xanax here and there. I'm not a fan of it and don't plan on do it again. The only thing that I can see doing once and a while for now on is molly and shrooms. As long as your not doing either more than once a month you won't ruin your body or go crazy. Any hard drugs aren't worth doing all the time. They get expensive and if you can't get high enough off weed or alcohol then I don't know what to say.

I'll keep your brother in my thoughts and thank you for sharing. I have an aunt that has been battling for many years now. It just seems like she's stuck at this point, with no way out. All we can do is love. That's it. Definitely the reason why I haven't tried drugs. The risk outweigh the reward a million times fold. Keep your head up OP.

Dang.

I've seen too many kids when I was in high school get their lives messed up from substance abuse.

That stuff has never interested me in the least and I feel for those who are trying to get out.

Sorry to hear about this, OP.

Your brother sounds like he lacked self control and had an addiction.

Recreational drug use may lead to addiction but be clear that the two are different things.

Son was/is popping pills like they candy. I don't see NTers bragging about doing that much on here.

addiction is a disease, some people just have an impossible time trying to stop any drug abuse. I also abused drugs when I was younger late teens, until one day you just look at yourself and situation and it makes you sick. So sick that change is the only option you have.

A lot of addiction is rooted in ongoing/recurring pain, be it mental or physical.

I'm not trying to make excuses for your brother, but maybe his diverticulitis led him to self medicate because of the pain...then it snowballed.

It happens a lot.

LOL Sounds like a drug addict in the making. Everybody says they will have self control, until something bad happens and you pop a pill to feel better, that doesn't work so you pop 2 more, and there you are on the path of addiction.

Wanna avoid the addiction disease, don't do Drugs. There is no safe amount of drugs. Even drugs your doctor gives you have tons of side effects and contains things that even they don't know.

Its insane that people count calories, wanna know whats in their fast food, yet Don't take the time to check what those pills their doc gives them has inside of it. Some of these drugs are causing you Cancer, ripping your stomachs, making you lose your memory, derailing your health and making you older.

i started with the weed, tried the coke dabbled in the pills, rolled, ate shrooms, smoked meth 3X,smoked crack more than once, and then became a heroin addict..now every morning i have to wake up to go to the methadone clinic..addiction can strike anyone at anytime of their life it doesnt discriminate.

i was addicted to smoking black tar heroin for 4 yrs or so, i started on pills but didnt realize i was an addict until it was too late, the thing that snapped me out of it was when this dude i used to cop that lived near me and i became really good friends with went missing we had heard that he might've been killed through all the street talk but noone said anything, his fam was on fb telling him to call them and they just thought he was somewhere chillin, this was last august and in december some hikers found his body...apparently he had been shot execution style and then they burned him..they were supposed to be taking him to pick up then they got back and noticed that one of the guys that was driving had his place broken into and thought homie had something to do with it..these 2 dudes beat the crap outta him and drove him to the desert when they got there he got out the car and started to run the dude pointed the gun at him then homie looked back and saw him pointing the gun at him so he ran back and started to beg him not to kill him...dude walked him out of sight from the other guy and blew his brains out..they caught these guys in may..the guy that pulled the trigger hated me and this could've been me..he was asking where i lived and all this other ishh, dude was 40 yrs old, but anywho i go to the methadone every morning at 6am to dose, this keeps me from withdrawing, i dont want to rely on this forever this is just what works for me now at this moment, i go to NA meetings 3 times a week and i stopped talking to everyone that does drugs, i dont judge anyone when they tell me they're going through substance abuse because when i was messed up all i wanted was someone to talk to and can relate to and tell me how i could get myself better.

when i could stop i didnt want to and then when i wanted to stop i couldnt...

the most messed up i've ever been was when i was 20 i smoked weed took extasy snorted coke got drunk and popped some oxycontin all this in an hour..also the lean stuff everyone is into i was drinking it str8 out the bottle to try to help my withdrawals and it did nothing for me...i am terrified of needles i could never shoot up, it made me angry tho, that my buddies would shoot up a tenth of a gram .1 and be fallin out damn near od'ing and i would have to smoke a gram to even feel ok..if you do pain pills most likely you will move up to heroin..never in my life did trying heroin cross my mind but when all the oc's and dilaudids disappeared this was the only thing available.

im 26 in december and ive been clean since april..i stopped smoking weed about 5 yrs ago, when i started H i dropped everything else, i dont even drink..i also dont like it when people say ew this or that but have never tried and only know about what they heard on an after school special...some of those things arent as lethal as they say they are its also all in moderation i treated my experimentation as that..an experiment..knew how much to take and what not to mix it with..its ok to try things out but dont let it take control of your life..

It happens a lot.

It wasn't the diverticulitis. It's a lifetime of unaddressed emotional issues. He's self medicated in one form or another most of his life. It's just a sad situation all around. I just don't think people who use drugs and this case abuse prescription pills truly appreciate the damage they are doing internally in the long run.

hope your fam gets through this..

smoked weed back in high school for a while because it was "cool" but stopped after it messed with my life at home...

never messed with anything heavier because i witnessed friends and family go through the addiction cycle at a young age..
