This is the thing I don't understand at all. The writers who are attached to larger media organizations, celebrities, athletes and musicians don't need the blue check. The only people that would pay for the blue check are pretenders
I like Twitter, I think it's a simple and easy to use platform but if it turns into a hellscape then I will just stop using it.

That's not true. Fake/catfish/parody accounts exist. A fair amount of people are too stupid to notice follower count and sometimes with women/models the fake accounts have more followers than the real ones.
Blue checks came about in part because of Tony La Russa sued twitter over a fake account.
Charging for verification is stupid but it's an easy way to generate money. Maybe the criteria for getting verified won't change but they get to squeeze money out of it.
As of now they can get about 8.5 million a month if all the blue checks paid for the subscription.

One of the rules of business is that it's hard to get people to pay for something that they've been given for free.
