Yankees eye Mauer talks

The baseball world is watching the Joe Mauer contract watch, and no team is paying closer attention outside the Twin Cities than the New York Yankees.

The general consensus has the franchise catcher agreeing to stay in Minnesota, but the talks have been quiet in recent weeks. The relative calm prompted Jim Souhan of the Star Tribune to write Thursday that the Twins might consider trading Mauer at some point.

Bill Madden of the NY Daily News writes that the Yankees have the financial resources and the available talent to land Mauer if the talks go south. Both Jesus Montero and Austin Romine are solid catching prospects. One could be selected as the eventual successor to Jorge Posada and the other could land in Minnesota.

If Mauer were to reach the free agent market this winter, it could set off a wild bidding war between the Yankees and Red Sox. "If they (Twins) decide to trade him, the Yankees have the better pieces to get him," a scout tells the Daily News.
