Hard Drive might not be bad could just be the enclosure. You could try and buy an enclosure and place that HD in it. And if that don't work buy a New Internal HD and put it in the enclosure

I had it for almost 2 years or so. It's a western digital my book.

All you need to do is take apart your external HD and just plug in on top like a Sega or Nintendo cartridge. I had a HD die which was only about 2-3 years old and used under 10 times, but I was able to reuse it with this.

I remember it being dropped at one point. Now the light doesn't even turn on nor do I hear any drive spinning.

I have to check this out. My HD died a few months back too and I really want to retrieve the files I had in there. Does it work for internal HDs though?

Posted this in the other external hard drive but I'll do it again.

I got my girlfriend an external hard drive for Christmas a couple years back. Now I own a Mac, but her hard drive isn't formatted for Macs. What do you guys know about reformatting?

it'll work fine.
external hard drives are just internal hard drives put inside of an enclosure.
Just make sure your hard drive is a sata hard drive if you plan on getting this particular one

Thanks for the tip, much appreciated. Good thing I took it back from Best Buy when they replaced my HD. Hopefully this works.

I second this!  Not only is it convenient, but if you need a new hard drive, you won't have to pay for the external enclosure over and over.  You just pop in a new internal drive and you're set.

If you travel a lot though, and need to take the drive with you, then an external one might be the best option.

that harddrive dock works great. plus internal harddrives are alot cheaper too

The Power Supply sucks on many of these external drives. That Dock is convenient option and besides you can always buy an internal HD if the external is busted.

Use the external HD for media and buy a SSD.
BTW!: Is there any HD docks that support SATA3 and USB 3.0?
