External Storage Drive Issues....HELP!

Long story short, I have a external storage drive that I use to keep my business files and it's tripping. I plugged it into my computer today and now it's saying it needs to be reformatted. If I do reformat it will I lose the documents that's on it right now? Is there a way around the reformatting so that I could get all the files I need off of it now? Thank you good folks for any info you can provide.
