A black architect was questioned and humiliated on Wednesday when she attempted to deposit her paycheck into her account at a new bank. Bank personnel apparently refused to believe that the check was real.

Black Entertainment Television (BET) reported Friday on Trish Doolin, an architect who recently moved to take a job with Nelson, Inc. in Seattle.

Because she just arrived at the firm, her direct deposit had not been established, so Doolin drove to a branch of KeyBank to deposit her check in person. She deposited the check and then went about her business.

Hours later, she received a call from the bank asking her to return to the branch. A banker who BuzzFeed News identified as Thor Loberg escorted her to a cubicle and began to ask a number of probing questions.

He asked my profession, and then asked why the company’s headquarters were in Philadelphia,” Doolin said. “Then he asked if HR could verify that I was an employee there.”

At no point did the bank representative ask for Doolin’s ID, she said, but called the company and when he couldn’t get anyone on the phone, told Doolin that KeyBank would have to hold her check for nine days while they “verified the funds.”

When I realized that I was defending who I was, trying to prove to someone I didn’t know who I was, I knew I was being discriminated against,” Doolin told BuzzFeed. “It was just completely demeaning.”

At around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon, Doolin called the bank and spoke to a woman who assured her that Loberg is “far from racist” and that he would have done the same to any customer.

In the end, the customer service representative released Doolin’s check into her account.

“She made sure to tell me that she was sorry that I was ‘having a bad day,’” Doolin said. “At the end of the conversation, she told me, ‘Go have a drink or something.’”

Doolin said the experience has left her raw and hurt.

“I live in a world where, no matter what’s in my brain or purse, no matter how I wear my hair, no matter how fabulous I look when I walk out the door, I’m still black,” she said. “People still clutch their purses when I walk past.”

She said she’s not sure how to tell her employer about the humiliating ordeal.

When you’re black, you can’t go marching around saying, ‘I’ve been discriminated against.’” she told Tamerra Griffin at BuzzFeed. “It’s that silent pain. You can still hurt, but just don’t do it too loudly.”

Raised in Seattle, par the course depending on what part of Seattle she was in :{

They just hate us flourishing :{ :{ :{

I once had lost my I'd and only had my passport for a few weeks while I got a new drivers license. I came into a bank to cash a check and the teller gave me side eye about my passport. First she said they don't accept this form of ID which is a straight up lie, it's a US passport :rolleyes

Then she called a manager and cuz straight up started asking me questioning about pages on my passport like where I've been. I snatched my **** back, got his name, the teller name and made a complaint. This was back in 2008. I kept up at it and maybe a few months later I got a formal apology from the bank and letter from corporate, but you know what that **** doesn't really do **** for me.

What's funny to me is when people say why not complain or report. What the **** am I gonna do with a apology? I was still disrespected straight and down nothing fixes that, it shouldn't have happened.

This happened to a coworker of mine(not black), except the bank questioned her immediately. I think this is standard procedure to be honest for large deposits.

All we can do is create our own places of business. Progress that should've been made in the 60's while we were so busy marching to have equal access to the same places that are still pulling bs like this. I'll be looking into the Black bank in my area, I implore all of you to as well.

Tried to open a bank account with a black bank here in Nashville a few weeks ago.
They tried to hit me with 3X the deposit amount of other banks, had ALL KINDS of crazy tacked on fees for example $1/month fee for having/using my debit card
and a host of others I cant remember. And this would be with me using direct deposit. I said F that and walked out.

Went over to the white bank. No fees of ANY kind(of course except overdraft fees) and that icludes no ATM fees EVER. If I go to an ATM
that is different from my bank and get charged a fee, it is refunded back to my account each month. Free credit monitoring and a few other perks.

Point is, we have to do better as black businesses about offering a quality product. I am willing to pay a little more to a black business, to support my community, but the product or service has to be AT LEAST up to the industry standard. I wont pay MORE for worse service or lesser quality products.

As far as the story goes... they have policies in place to make sure that a check is legit.
But they couldve kept all of the personal questions and been a little more professional in their verification process.

But she still has the upper hand. All she has to do is take her money out of that bank and voila.

Mixed feelings on this one. It was a new bank and if they are unfamiliar with a company or type of check this happens. It's happened to me with a $500 check. And it seems that they started OD'in with the questions when they could'nt reach anyone at her company. I agree it should have been addressed immediately but not sure if this place was just being overly cautious or discriminating . Either way some bodies getting chewed out.

Not that I doubted it before but now we know the racists are all up in Seattle too.

Prolly tried to deposit a large sum. Prolly justifying it by the type of work she does.

I don't see discrimination here, just standard practice.

i think you got your order of events wrong

they started with the "od" questions BEFORE attempting "to reach someone at her company"
