So I got pulled over tonight, was issued a summon for doing 20mph over the speed limit was wondering what my options are. In NJ for the record.
Officer approached my car, asked if I knew why I was being pulled over. Not really thinking I said I was speeding, thinking maybe if I admit my mistake he willlet me off. He quizes me to see if I know where I am coming from, because I was about 15 miles from the beach and young guess he wanted to see if he caught adrunk boardwalk goer. He takes my registration and DL and goes back to his car for a good 5-10 minutes before returning and handing my passenger the summon andsaying "there is a court date on there but don't think you need to show up". I look at the ticket and see I was noted for doing 70mph in a 50. Ididn't want to challenge the officer right then and there but there is no way I was doing 70. I saw the cop his car was halfway in the road (front wasparked in the shoulder), I was approaching a sharp turn anyway so I was natrually slowing down, in all honesty I was prob doing around 58 to think I was doing65 would be a stretch.
I didn't want to step out of my car and approach the officer to demand to see the radar after he walked away. So am I basiclly SOL if I try to go to courtand fight this? I firmly beleive I was not doing 70, and I think its funny cause the highest bracket of fines is 20mph over so I think it's odd I was doing70 and not say 69, 71, 72, etc... I guess the burden of proof is on me now to prove I wasn't doing 70, any advice? My record is clean btw, never beenissued a ticket before.
