FIGHTING IN SPORT?

I was watching First Take and they were talking about Grienke/Quentin fight.

Stephen A Smith brought up a good "read between the lines" point.

He said why do sports like Hockey and Baseball get to fight each other and its called "policing themseleves"

But sports like Football and Basketball it is severely looked down upon if they fight. They are called "thugs"

Why the difference?

Thoughts?

In the NBA they get suspended for even stepping one foot into the court while in the MLB you have a dugout clearing brawl every month

The reason it's so harsh in basketball is because of the huge negative hit basketball took after the Detroit Indiana incident.

In football I couldnt tell you. They have pads on, but in basketball fan proximity has to be taken into consideration. Like dude above me said the Indiana/Detroit brawl spilled over into the stands and it got out of hand. Gotta look out for the families and fans that don't want to be involved with that nonsense.

Probably because early in their histories, baseball and hockey accepted that punching each other was ok. It's laughable. They show highlights every week of two hockey players punching each other until one guy falls down but if football or basketball players did that they are seen as violent fools and get suspended for a large number of games. There's no logic to it, people just accept it for whatever reason.

Nolan Ryan/ Robin Ventura....I'm on my phone so I can't look for more right now and lets not pretend in the NBA the fights are more violent

I didn't know fighting in baseball was encouraged like it was in hockey. I have never heard of a football "fight" Being called thuggish. And in basketball it's because the real fights seem to fall into the crowd and they flop like no other.

I didn't know fighting in baseball was encouraged like it was in hockey. I have never heard of a football "fight" Being called thuggish. And in basketball it's because the real fights seem to fall into the crowd and they flop like no other.

Shut up the Miami/FIU fight wasn't that long ago...thug was coming out everywhere

And race has a lot to do with it...never seen a white athlete be called a thug....scrappy

Stephen A was obviously hinting at a racial aspect.

But it can also be explained by a little thing called the Malice at the Palace. Maybe the league wanted to be a little cautious about their image after a fight spilled into the stands and involved regular people.

I don't know what baseball Stephen A. Smith is watching, but policing is not the same as fighting.  Policing is a pitcher throwing at a batter because his teammate got hit, sort of like "an eye for an eye."  However, when the benches clear, there's usually ejections, just like in basketball, and possibly suspensions, but that depends on the commissioner, just like in basketball.  That's not a race issue, that's just tradition.  Now, the players being called "thugs" is a race issue...

i think older heads need to chime in on what the general public felt about this issue before the detroit incident.

were nba players always referred to as thugs when they'd fight in the 80s and 90s?

its a pretty bad look for the NBA that the last 2 fights in memory for the general public is malice in the palace and stop snitching melo

If you name all the favorite NBA guys who were known for hard fouls/elbows etc and fighting.. chances are they played in the 80s through the 90s

Pretty sure the term thug started being used in reference to athletes around the late 90's early 2000s...basically when braids/tattoos started being becoming really popular.

Basketball...well, the biggest black-eye the NBA has ever had (player-wise) was the Malice at the Palace. Look at the trickle down effect...rules changed both on and OFF the court because of it.

I hope you arent insinuating that these players don't walk away with awful reputations after these incidents. Case in point, outside of Mike Milbury's awful tenure as GM, he's most famously (or infamously) known for the shoe incident from the 70's. Go to google to get the details.

Anyways, If you follow the sport, you'd know that MANY hockey players are labeled "thugs." It goes from no-talent goons like Derek Boogaard, to guys who can play a little like Matt Cooke.

Also, you are flat out wrong about there being brawls in baseball once a month. Stop making blanket statements.

So there's no white people that were invoiced in the fight? It's obvious you have selective hearing.
