Finger nail polish remover to clean 9s

I was heard finger nail polish remover works great to clean the bottoms of white shoes, any one know this to be true or false? I was gonna do it on my baron 9s, bad idea? They aren't bad at all I could get them clean with soap and water but I was wanting to try and go the extra mile.
