What a surprise, another aged veteran signing a one year deal... Livan Hernandez was signed by the Twins today... Yikes

I hope we can get 10 wins out of him...

twins r gonna be horrendous this year...at least thats a couple guaranteed victories for the Yankees

The worst part is, I give him 'til the all star game... Tony Batista didn't last long... Rondell White should've been cut instead of him... Besidestrading for Delmon Young, this was our biggest off-season pickup?

Other newcomers...
Craig Monroe

Adam Everett... could be decent, probably not...

And pending Liriano's return, Boof is our #1 starter

I hope guys like Cuddy, Mauer, and Morneau can carry this team... Scott Baker should be better and Slowey is nice... Plus we still got Nathan... But when yousee the Indians keep everyone, and the Tigers ADD D-Train and Miguel Cabrera

I read this on the crawl on ESPN and immediately yelled "WHY?" I was alone, but it didn't matter. We should have learned from Ortiz and Ponsonlast year, you can't throw in a mediocre pitcher and expect results, especially in the American League and ESPECIALLY in the AL Central. Very muchchagrined over this deal. I also hate the term "innings eater" which Gardenhire loves. This guys near 5 ERA last year in the NL isn't going totranslate. Oh, but he was the '97 World Series MVP. Please, that was lifetimes ago.

even though the twins have seemingly a horrible team. i still can see you guys end up winning 75-80 games just because you have those utility guys that alwaysget it done not mention you still have morneau/cuddyer/mauer and a decent pitching staff

I don't mind deal. They needed some sort of veteran starter in their rotation. Hopefully he is a nice surprise for the Twins. Either way, I'm stillintrigued with the club this year. I don't think they'll be able to compete with Cleveland and Detroit, but it might be fun to see where our future isheading, going into the new era (new stadium)

my comments from the mlb offseason thread:

this is good news for you nnarum and your twinkies. you just got yourself a remarkably reliable, innings eating, veteran presence to place amongst all the young guns. i was disappointed that our front office didn't offer livo a deal after he openly campaigned to return to dc. i have nothing but respect for livo, he was my dude when he pitched for the nationals/expos franchise. i admire the effortless way he pitches.
whats with the hate for livo? obviously he's not going to catapult the twinkies into being a championship contender, but he was the beststarting pitcher left in the free agent market. he'll be a solid #3 or #4 starter for you guys.

Yeah, I'm not mad that we picked him up. I'd rather have him to throw in the rotation than not. With all that said, this year is looking to be quiterough. Let's hope Liriano is as healthy as he/the team says he is.

I don't like it because to me it seems glaringly obvious that he'll struggle against some of the better hitting clubs in all of baseball. I'm notpositive, but I wanna say he gave up 33 home runs last year. In all honesty, we HAVE to go with youth this year in our rotation. Yes, inexperience sucks, butI'm a firm believer we can piece together a pretty underrated staff of Baker, Bonser, Liriano, Slowey, and the 5th spot being up for grabs betweenBlackburn and a couple other guys. This Baker guy was one error away from a perfect game, he's got the skills to be a solid #2 or 3 guy.

that's not a bad pick-up nnarum. as JRain said (wow, i actually agree with him,) you're getting a guy who can give you 200+ innings. i had read thatwe we're interested in him and was hoping we would sign him.

I dont mind the pickup. As others have stated he eats innings, which is half the battle. As long as he can stay healthy (who knows he may be 46 yrs old....buthe still is never hurt) he'll probably earn his salary. The team had no other choice, they either have to overpay for below average free agent pitchers(see Kyle Lohse) or pay basically market value for an aging pitcher on the decline.

The only problem here though is the hot rumor making the rounds up in these parts.....that Livan may actually be the opening day starter. That tells youeverything you need to know about the Twins staff right now. But despite what the team tells you, they know full well this season is a wash and they dont needto make any more deals. They let the team go to hell by letting Hunter walk for nothing and Johan walk for bit prospects. If we are to believe the past 3 yearsof "We have so many good arms coming up in our minors that we are set for the next decade" then I would think we are shooting for a strong teamopening day new stadium. Not now though.

Livan won't be the opening day starter. They won't do that. I won't say that this season is a total "wash." We have great players lookingto rebound from not so great years. I like the idea of platooning Kubel/Monroe at DH, a far improvement from thinking Rondell White was going to do anythingworthwhile. I'm a believer that Rick Anderson can churn out another top tier ERA group of pitchers as he's done ever since he's been here.

Found this quite interesting....
Twins starters (without Santana)
YearW-LERA
200744-524.62
200651-505.07
200538-484.24
200439-404.52

Total: 172-190, 4.60;
Santana: 70-32, 2.89

I love the Twins and although I know our rotation needs a lot of help my take on the situation is WHY? Hernandez does eat up a lot of innings. That I'mnot disputing at all. I think I saw a statistic that he has pitched more innings over the last 7 years or so than any other player. That's great butwhen you have an ERA that's barely under 5 and just as many walks as strikeouts in the NL no less, I have a hard time believing that you'll have muchsuccess in the AL Central. The Twins won't be terrible this year but there isn't a snow balls chance in hell we make the playoffs so why not just givesome younger guys a chance. Just my two cents...

So to keep pace with the Tigers' acquisitions of Dontrelle and Miguel Cabrera, the Twins signed Livan Hernandez?
