I was doing it about 3-4 years ago.  It's completely safe and doesn't affect performance much.  I would recommend it, but just haven't reinstalled it on my computer.  I seem to be using up most of my cycles a lot of the time, so I don't think I would benefit them much by doing this.

Side note... I think they may have found some of the AIDS structure from something like this from someone running it on their Xbox.
 
i used to do it on my ps3 a few years ago, but Folding@home yellow lighted it when i left it on one night.

I never did it again until they changed F@H into life with playstation. You can look around the earth in it and it has live weather on the earth model and news from all around the globe. its pretty cool, but i'm not letting it sit overnight anymore.
