General Mills: Original Cheerios are GMO free
By Aaron Smith @AaronSmithCNN January 3, 2014: 8:37 AM ET

General Mills said that it has changed the sourcing of ingredients for its original Cheerios cereal, after an activist group said that the company bowed to pressure and stopped using genetically modified ingredients.

"We switched from what we were using to non-GMO corn and non-GMO pure sugar cane," said General Mills (GIS, Fortune 500) spokesman Mike Siemienas.

He said the company did not change the formula and has never used genetically modified oats. The company said that it has always used whole grain oats.

But he said the company did switch from using beet sugar, which is sometimes genetically modified, and also switched from certain sources of corn to ensure that their corn sources were not genetically modified. He said this change occurred over the last year and required a significant investment.

However, these changes apply only to original Cheerios, he said, because purging genetic modification from the myriad other types, like Honey Nut and Apple Cinnamon, would be "difficult, if not impossible."

This sucks....looks like I'm switching over to regular. That being said, I wish there was a gov't regulation that made these food companies disclose (on the labels) EXACTLY what is in their products. Personally, I try to be as proactive as I can when it comes to eating a good diet, but after reading things like this, it really makes you think twice. I mean, you ASSUME that a food like Cheerios would be as healthy as it comes, but nope.... :{ Makes me wonder how many other foods that you can get at stores like Whole Foods are processed with GMOs?

cap'n crunch berries >>>

Oh man. I'm smh like I know what a GMO is.

Genetically Modified Organism. Pretty much any fruit, vegetable, plant, or animal that has been gentically modified in any way, shape, or form to alter it's behavior.

Typically, produce is genetically modified to be more resistant to the pesticides that companies like Monsanto uses.

It's becoming a really, really huge global issue, I suggest anyone interested to do some research into it.

I dunno if they changed something in cereal last year but i became allergic to it out of nowhere :lol

Had been eating it all my life, had some in december 2012 and broke out in hives. Had no idea what caused it at the time and had cereal again the next day and same thing :lol

A month later i got curious and had captain crunch, my throat was semi-shut, had hives, and i was yacking :{

RIP CEREAL.

There was a prop in California last November that would've required GMO labeling but it was defeated 53-47. Monsanto spent $45 million on it. The gov't and Monsanto are basically a revolving door. It's up to the people to vote with their dollars. Even healthy brands like Naked Juice used GMO's and got sued for it. This is why organic is important. I don't believe a food can be organic and GMO. Although they will probably change the definition of organic soon to include this.

The ingredients label has corn starch and canola oil listed. If I see that on an ingredient list I already know it's GMO. Anything from corn, soy, or canola is going to be GMO 99/100 times. You should pretty much assume any processed food in a grocery store that doesn't have a big fat USDA Organic label on the front of the box is GMO.

Nothing is safe. Its more about consuming the least amount possible.

They're out to get us.

- Much luv, Good luck.. Stay Strong, Stay Freshh !! :smokin :smokin

Man, in all seriousness, thank you all for making me aware of this. As you can see I'm ignorant to the extent of GMOs in food. I was thinking that it was in just certain foods that are out in the stores. I had no clue of it's reach. That being said, I'm going to do a little more reading tonight on Monsanto. Crazy they spent that much money on it. Makes no sense to me why this was voted down which would essentially educate people on what is in the foods they are buying.

I mean, we have folks in politics regulating the sizes of drinks, eliminating trans fats, etc. But we're allowing GMOs to still be processed in foods? **** is crazy. Why go as far as eliminate smoking in restaurants if we're eating crap that we don't even know what it's made of?

My blood is boiling right now...

*edit*

I'm going to bring it back to Whole Foods for a second. THey sell HNC...probably other cereals that have GMOs in it as well. I just wonder how many of their other products have GMOs? I split my grocery shopping between there and TJs. I would like to think that thye're a little more vigilant about what they're stocking their shelves with, right?

This is the truth

Do you know regualtors allow rat feces in cereal while they make it. i think it can be up to like 3% or something.

Im not saying they put it in on purpose but sometimes it finds its way in it

It doesn't only go for cereal. Canned goods and anything mass produced in a factory. This also goes for roaches and bugs. There's a limit upon inspection, if it's over the limit, it's take out, if not, it passes and gets put on shelves.
