Good news for folks who love ESPN radio host Colin Cowherd:CBS is developing a half-hour comedy based on his life! Because, really, why limit yourself to just listening to him when you can watchhim, too.
(Or more specifically, watch some actor who probably knows as muchabout sports as Cowherd feign outrage and contrive controversy allwhile maintaining that goofy grin.)
Details via Variety:
"Groundedfor Life" creators Bill Martin and Mike Schiff are behind the show aswriters and exec producers, while Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaumare also exec producers. Cowherd will serve as a producer on thesitcom, which comes from CBS TV Studios....
Project reps familiar territory for CBS, which has frequently mined theworld of sportswriters and personalities for sitcom fodder. "
EverybodyLoves Raymond," where fictional Ray Barone (played by Ray Romano) is aNew York sportswriter is the most successful example. More recently,Jay Mohr's character on "Gary Unmarried" is a sports radio commentator.
At the other end of the spectrum are shows like "Listen Up," which was loosely based on the life for former Washington Postcolumnist and ESPN personality Tony Kornheiser. Jason Alexander, bestknown as George Costanza, played "Tony Kleinman" with Malcolm-JamalWarner served as a dreadlocked version of Michael Wilbon. The showlasted seven months before it was canceled in April 2005.
No word yet on who will play Cowherd's character. Let me be the first to suggest Tobias Fünke. He seems perfect for the role.
Real head scratcher.
