Why dont players like Blake Griffin  and Dwight Howard do a jump shot or shoot underhand at the free throw line?

Isnt a jump shot a more natural -rhythm movement? Therefore you could spend less time practicing a different free throw motion

If you shoot your free throw correctly with proper flex in your knees extending up to shoot through to your toes while balanced its just as effective.

But really those ways you mentioned look to quirky or embarrassing so most would never try it. And there are a ton of players where ANYTHING would be better then what they're doing currently. Just wont happen though.

I dont know think a jump shot would be that awkward.....yes it would be different but all it takes it is a few succesful guys to do it.

I just find it weird that people that can shoot jumpers can't hit FTs. I mean my FT motion is the exact same as my jumper with a jump added to it. Plus you even get to relax, take a breather and then get into your motion. I mean I use to be a horrible FT shooter and then turned into one that was making over 80% so it's hard for me to understand how people can't get into it.

Blake Griffin has terrible form at the free throw line, I don't know how his coaches continue letting him shoot like that.

Why do people automatically assume that players that can't shoot 70% from the line are going to shoot better underhanded right away? It's not just about looking dumb. How much time do you think it's going to take for someone like Dwight to get decent at shooting underhanded? He's a bad shooter with bad touch. Unless he's dunking it, it's not going to go in at a high rate. Can't imagine him being better shooting jumpers or underhanded considering he's practiced his current free throw form thousands of times.

I think you can do it as long as you dont cross the line when you land.

they would rather look good than shoot underhanded. would be embarrassing

always thought that. i wanna see just one modern bad shooter try it

Drives me nuts when pros suck at free throws. Absolutely nuts

My dude Bill. Shows you dont need to look good when shooting if you can drain them.

He had the ugliests shot in the world for a while too - effective though.

I agree that there is no excuse - you just have to get decent form (which a coach or definitely a specialist can help with) and then shoot a few hundred a day.

When Magic Johnson led the league in FT% he was shooting 150 after practice each day - and I can guarantee that any of those other great shooters (90% guys) were practicing religiously to keep that level.

This was problem was brought up by my local sports radio show. They were questioning why big men in the NBA generally suck at the free throw line and the guest columnist/writer said that these guys should be changing their form no matter how ridiculous they may look. He noted that Shaq should have done the under and up rather than shot put it in the basket.

That Cartwright FT was tough to watch
