Sep 15 · Nike Air Yeezy - Tooling Design Process

SC-Tooling7.jpg

With all the talk about how dope it would be to own the Grammy or AJ VI-soled Yeezy sample, take a load of these prototypes and realize how many different forms the Air Yeezy couldhave taken. Though we've previously seen an inside look at the production process,Nike's Mark Smith and Tiffany Beers discuss several ideas, dead-ends and problems they encountered while trying to execute the best possible version ofNike's first non-athlete signature shoe.

Ever wonder why images of the glow-in-the-dark soles look so bright? It's not photoshopped if that's what you're thinking. The design team meticulouslyexperimented with different mixes of rubber to get the brightest and long lasting glow without compromising the integrity of the sole. But even before theydecided on the glow route, Kanye pushed for a battery-operated illuminating sole. Some may speculate he would want something like this, trying to embrace thefuturistic aura of the "most likely never to be retailed," Marty McFlyprototype. Nonetheless, Nike found it to be more practical to drop this concept. Not only was the glow agreed to make a better look, those whowere able to grab a pair of Air Yeezy's would have supposedly been paying far more if they contained this electro luminescence technology.

It seems that most of the design variations lied in the aesthetics of the midsole. One of the images after the jump shows a very rare look samples ofmidsoles with "Death Star" contours where an air bag would typically be on Nike's. Fortunately for us, the final product donned a more familiarlook endearing to most sneakerheads' hearts. Hold up Kanye, Nike can't use Jordan templates! Behold a clever solution… thanks to Yeezy himself, actually. The canny artist managed to surpass a technicality by using the tooling for the Nike Air Assault Retro, which is pretty much the same midsole as theAir Jordan III but has Nike branding on the sole. What would we do without Kanye's strive to go the distance? Not a dope shoe, and certainly not aplethora of samples. Be sure to check out the images below for an even more in-depth look at the making of the Air Yeezy. via SC.

I want a pair of BLACK/PINK so bad, but 500/700 is too much imo.

so the grammy yeezys went for $16,500.00...

i wonder if they actually paid... LOL!!!

the ones with the jordan VI tooling went for $7,400.00...

wow thats alto of money for just 1 pair of shoe

Does any one find it really strange that you NEVER see Kanye in his Yeezy's?? He is regularly photo'd in his Louie's but its literally been monthssince we seen him in Yeezy's....At first I thought maybe the deal that he signed was for both creation and endorsement for a certain period of time..buthe's been out in Timbs and J's but no Yeezy's.....Maybe this might be it for Yeezy's or maybe he does have an exclusivity clause with LV untilthe end of the year (current rumor floating around) then new Yeezy hype will begin in January/Febuary....we'll see kids....well see..

you could never spend that much with being a dj, there are people who make crazy money like doctors lawyers etc who have shoe fetishes. Sadly idont make that kind of money either.

^^^ still waiting too man. Would rather much do a trade then to drop that much money on a pair of NIKES. thats Gucci prices right there..lol. Nike are fools ifthey don't drop those charcoal and red ones. Next to the black and pinks, that color is the best.
