All it premium is is purer gas. Less additives and whatnot. If your car takes regular, it doesn't matter if you put premium. Even though it's a complete waste, your car won't break down because of a higher quality gas.

But on the other hand, if your car takes premium and you feed it regular you're going to see some problems. This is because the engines are more intricate (turbos, superchargers, DI, etc) and NEED premium to function properly. 

Putting premium in a Honda Civic will do nothing. It's neither good nor bad.

You got bad luck than g, i have a friend that swears by only putting premium fuel in his completely stock civic, purchased it new and has had it for over six years now. He's only put premium in it and the car is running fine. I've never heard of a car breaking down due to someone putting premium fuel in a regular octane engine. Not calling you a liar or anything but that's strange if the diagnosis was your engine breaking down due to you putting premium fuel in a car that doesn't require it.

I used to pump 87 octane from arco and gas mileage and throttle response was horrible. And there was unusual engine vibration ( wtf) One day my friend hooked me up with shell 91 and it lasted forever and engine performed way better. So now 91 from chevron or shell is what i get. This was on a vehicle that was recommended 87 from the owners manual btw. Everyone should try it and see, that 15 to 20 cent difference might make a difference you will like. Especially dudes with any car with a v6 or v8

as a technician i highly HIGHLY recommend staying AWAY from arco/costco gas. ive seen some crazy sludge/carbon build up around valve seats and even inside the combustion chambers..

i ONLY put shell or chevron.

for those who want to get technical about fuel..

basically lower octanes burn more easily, made for engines with lower compression.

a low compression vehicle needs easily burnt fuel to ignite on TIME. Timing is EVERYTHING.

higher compression engines need fuel that doesnt combust as easily. because if you put 87 in a car that takes 91, the fuel burns early, and you're pre-detonating or "knocking".

now, the other way around is highly debatable but in my experience I dont believe its harmful, but its also not beneficial. theres no point, because theres no added horsepower or gas mileage. its just more expensive and you're just throwing money away.

basically, ALWAYS put what the manufacturer recommends. and stay away from arco or costco gas.

Yeah but Chevron and Shell are hella expensive for premium gas. Around my way its about 20 - 30 cents higher than the avg. for premium. Do you know if walmart or valero falls into this category? I have a 2006 rx-8 and well carbon buildup is the death of these cars, so if you have any more information on this I can read online it'll be greatly appreciated
