Saw this in the elevator today, I'm good off having 200 of these in the streets. They claim that the one they sent across the country only got into one accident and it was due to the humans error. But IDK.....

Volkswagen is releasing their version overseas soon. Nissan is working on releasing one by 2020 as well. I still think we need better methods of transport tho. It's been a century without any real innovation as to how we travel.

CA DMV just approved testing for this I believe. I read something like you have to have a flawless driving record to use one and must be ready to take control of the vehicle at all times in case something happens. So what's the point then?

What I read was that the project was praised for the features it didn't have, like; brake pedals, dashboard, steering wheel etc.

The car’s headlights flashed twice as it detected Steven's personal ID and unlocked. The driver door automatically swung open with a light tap, and he sat down in the uncomfortable vinyl seat and pressed the startup button. The interior of the car lit up blue as displays came online all over the dash. The computer system quickly identified his ID and gave him a mechanical welcome.
“Good morning, Mr.Foster”. The car’s computer voice said. "Where can I take you today?". For some reason, auto manufacturers had decided that all people needed a soothing British-accented voice to announce every function in the car.
He reached over to the center console and flipped a small, metallic switch. A panel in front of him slid open and a control wheel popped out and clicked into place. All modern cars were automatically driven by GPS guided computers, but Michael preferred to drive manually. His father had been a mechanic, and owned an antique car from the early 21st century, called a “Mustang”. The car was powered by an internal combustion engine as opposed to the battery systems which had been standard for decades, and had to be controlled manually at all times. His father had let him drive the Mustang several times, which is where he picked up a preference for manual driving. Most people found it a hassle, but he enjoyed the feel of driving, and not having a computer shuttle him around.
Of course, even in manual mode the car was nothing like his father’s car, the steering wheel was flimsy and responded poorly, and the car was limited to the 55 miles per hour speed limit at all times. Technically the manual system was a backup in case the computer failed, so it wasn’t designed to be ergonomic.
He pulled onto the freeway and began his morning commute.As he pressed the accelerator, he imagined the throaty roar of the Mustang’s engine, and the stomach dropping acceleration the internal combustion engine provided. Instead, he was met with the barely audible whine of the cars electric motor as it struggled to reach 55. As he approached 55, the car stopped accelerating and held the speed limit. An old woman in front of him was driving 5 under in an identical car. This was ok, as slow driving was actually encouraged by the government for safety. He attempted to speed up and pass her, but nothing happened. The computer voice spoke up again. "Dangerous driving detected. Please follow all road rules. Thank you!" It gave him this reminder every time he attempted to go faster than 55, or to change lanes more than 100ft away from another car.
He attempted to enter the other lane, but turning the wheel only slightly adjusted the car. "Please maintain your lane" said the voice. In the other lane, a hot pink car drove next to him, where several teenage girls were texting on their phones. One of them glanced over at him and gave a disgusted look. "Ew, look, he actually drives! His car must be broken! Everyone knows a car is just an appliance!" she scoffed, and got back to texting.
Soon his exit was coming up. At the intersection the light had just turned yellow, if he sped up he could make it. But, the light turned red right as he went under it. The car slammed on the brakes and quickly reversed back to the light.As he continued on the road, he suddenly heard a faint rumble in the distance. He looked in his rearview mirror, and saw a red Mustang, just like his father's coming down the road.
The computer panicked at the car, which was going 70mph and threw his car to the side of the road. "Warning! Inefficient vehicle detected! Alerting EPA authorities!" the voice called out as the red car roared past.
Suddenly, the car swerved and cut off the hot pink sedan. The girly car's computer became confused and tried to pull over, instead throwing the car off the overpass into a ditch. The electric motor caused the battery to fail and catch fire, killing all the occupants.
The red car pulled up next to Steven. Inside was a man in a white racing suit, wearing a white racing helmet. He saw Steven using the manual driving controls and stopped. He stepped out and handed him the keys. "Take it, brother. Spread the message." He said. Suddenly an EPA helicopter flew in and assassinated the driver with an eco-friendly bio-degradable bullet.
He slammed the Mustang's accelerator as he easily out ran the speed limited police cars. He drove and drove, eventually leaving the city far behind. As the old car ran out of its combustible fuel, he got out and abandoned it by the side of the road. The only way he could ever refuel it was with gas from the black market.
The next day he woke up in an EPA mandated bio-friendly cell. HE knew this was it, he had polluted the environment too much. He knew he would have his license revoked and never drive again. He would have to use a special automatic only car from now on. He out the window and watched as the Mustang was lowered into a crusher and reduced to metal cubes. It was over. He suddenly felt relieved. He now loved the electric car.

those workers know damn well they saw and heard dude in that car, just grimey.I couldn't see myself giving up complete control to the machine, I don't even drive an auto. As long as I am able, I will drive stick shift.
