Get to the window and the broad hands me my coke, the glasses they're giving away, and a bag of food.
I politely thanked her, dipped.

I actually think he meant the lady gave him a bag of food by accident, thinking it was his, when in reality all he ordered was a coke. This means he got the food for free only paying for the drink.
