Most of the Gazans returned after stocking up on foodand other basic supplies that have become scarce due to the blockade imposed on the territory by Israel. UN personnel said they estimated the number ofPalestinians who entered Egypt to be 350,000.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak announced that he had ordered his troops to allow Palestinians to cross into Egypt because they were starving. Speaking at theCairo International Book fair, Mubarak told reporters that when Palestinians began breaking through the Gaza-Egypt border at Rafah by force, he told his men tolet them in to buy food before escorting them out.

"I told them to let them come in and eat and buy food and then return them later as long as they were not carrying weapons," he said, in answer toreporters' questions. Mubarak said his border guards originally had forced back the Gazans on Tuesday. "But today a great number of them came backbecause the Palestinians in Gaza are starving due to the Israeli siege. Egyptian troops accompanied them to buy food and then allowed them to return to theGaza Strip," he added.

Mubarak also criticized Hamas for continuing to fire missiles into Israel, saying that it was not helping the situation. He said that he had been in contactwith Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and helped convince him to resume fuel shipments into Gaza. "Although fuel was sent and electricity was back, someon the Palestinian side then fired seven missiles," he said. "This does not help to bring quiet."

Also Wednesday, Israel Radio reported that Egyptian police forcefully dispersed a protest held in Egypt in support of Gaza Palestinians. Police officers usedtear gas on the crowd and arrested some 500 people, most of them members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Israel is worried about the chaos on the Gaza-Egypt border, and expects Egypt to solve the problem, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Wednesday, several hours after the Gazans poured into Egypt.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Arye Mekel noted that Israel has no forces on the Gaza-Egypt border. Therefore, he said, "It is the responsibility of Egypt toensure that the border operates properly, according to the signed agreements," he said. "We expect the Egyptians to solve the problem. Obviously weare worried about the situation. It could potentially allow anybody to enter." Egyptian border guards and Hamas police took no action as Palestinianshurried over the border and began returning with bags of food, boxes of cigarettes and plastic bottles of fuel.

The chaotic scenes came on the sixth day of a complete closure of Gaza, imposed by Israel and backed by Egypt, in response to a spike in Gaza rocket attacks onIsraeli border towns. Hamas has orchestrated daily demonstrations on the Gaza-Egypt border, in an apparent attempt to appeal to Arab public opinion andpressure Egypt to open the passage.

On Tuesday, Israel eased the closure slightly, transferring fuel to restart Gaza's only power plant, and also sent in some cooking gas, food and medicine.Israel has pledged to continue limited shipments because of concerns that a humanitarian crisis could develop.

Before dawn Wednesday, Palestinian gunmen began blowing holes in the border wall running along the Gaza-Egypt border. Hamas security later closed most holes, but left two open and allowed free traffic through those. Hamas appears to be applying pressure on Egypt, which has cooperated with Israel's sanctions bykeeping the Rafah border closed. By affecting public opinion in Egypt, scenes of privation in Gaza could force Egypt to ease the border closure, allowing theHamas regime to relieve its isolation.

the corruption in Egypt makes me sick. Israel and the U.S. have the whole government and especially Mubarak by the balls. At least they had enough sense not toshoot any of those starving people. the fact that theyve held out on the palestinians for so long makes me a little bit embarassed of being egyptian.

it was bound to happen. people were literally starving because of the israeli blockade. makes me angry im in mcdonalds and this kid juss threw away a good bigmac cuz he threw it at his friend.

Did you get Mubarak's quote?
I told them to let them come in and eat
So that's the score? Not insane human rights violations engineering this desperate cry for the basic staples of life? 350,000 is a lot ofpeople to storm over a border in search of food. It's amazing how the United States can decry human rights violations as a reason for invading Iraq anddeposing Saddam Hussein and consciously overlook other atrocities such as the oppression of the Palestinians, Darfur, Burma, etc.

Unfortunately, the United States government's inaction is mirrored by its citizens' apathy.

On one hand you have a blockade that is going to hurt Palestinian civilians more than Hamas and on the other hand Israel is going to act in its own interests.

how the !#** does israel claim the $*!%+%@ moral high ground??? and of course the US can overlook this they are best buddies with israel %+@@%%*%#*!%'s

You can't give Hamas a free pass here either. Neither side is completely innocent, nor will they ever be.
The fight between Israel and Palestine is something that's probably going to continue until either A)one of them is completely eradicated or B) Theworld ends. It sounds morbid, but can anyone honestly see both sides ever coming to a peaceful agreement?

True, but lets not forget to give credit to the media, who of course contribute significantly to this apathy.

True, but when Israel is committing 90% of the crimes, supported by the United States, some can begin to understand why these people act out in the firstplace.

Bittersweet news though.

I can come up with a peaceful agreement that I feel is fair and I would agree with it whether I was Palestinian or Israeli.

Unfortunately, I am not every Palestinian and Israeli.

There are enough people on both sides who will accept nothing short of annihilation of the other side. There's no point in even trying with these peoplebecause their solution excludes the other side and is fundamentally opposed to the other side. To make it worse, there are too many outside pressures thatworsen the situation, whether it is Iran and the U.S. fighting their battles with Palestinian and Israeli blood or neighboring countries talking out of bothsides of their mouths....

Anyway, NYelectric, don't bite your tongue. I'd love to hear what you have to say. Maybe if it inspires me I'll stop biting my tongue too.

Tell Israel to end the occupation. Whoever is president after the elections should advise Israel to leave Palestine.

And Bush wants to truly get involved in resolving this conflict with one friggin year of his presidency left??

Yea, the saddest part is that there HAVE been peaceful agreements proposed by the Palestinians, along with the rest of the world; but of course, peace can never come about when you have the U.S. rejecting them.

What occuaption? Israel to leave Palestine? Palestinians are oppressed by there own government, when are you guys gonna get that through your head? The PLO,Hamas, and Al Aqsa Martyrs brigade, Fatah corrupted the Palestinian people for decades. Yassir Arafat stole millions of dollars from the US Government that wassuppose to be "aid" for his people.

The Palestinians have they're own government, own provinces and own police. Tell me how it's Israel's fault that they have ZERO running waterand sanitation? Israel allows limited number of Palestinians because of terrorism in to work.

The Palestinians have they're own government, but Israel calls them terrorists and won't work them and cuts off all the necessities to survive. Israel basically controls and water, sanitation, and food, and they wonder why people are willing to blow themselves up.

all of you who support israel by even a tenth of a percent are very very very shortsighted. lets bring it back...back before the CREATION of israel at theexpense of the Palestinians who consisted of Muslims and Christians. prior to then Jews and Muslims residing in Palestine were NOT enemies! SHOCK to you?"OMG but all my history books and teachers and the news say that jews hate muslims and muslims hate jews, and this is the way it's alwaysbeen!!!" If this is what you think, you're wrong. Jews and Palestinians, and Muslims for that matter have lived side by side for centuries. So theproblem occurred with the creation of Israel based on the false, though widely circulated premise "A land for a people for a people without a land".this statement is historically and completely false.

Now with Gaza we have a humanitarian crisis cause yes, Hamas is defending the palestinians right to EXIST, to LIVE. Whatever methods they use, (i condemnsuicide bombings, very very unislamic, but yet again, a suicide bomber has not been used for awhile now) is justified because they're facing one of thebest armies in the WORLD, thanks to the US Gov't. Like talib said, "israelis got tanks, and palestinians got rocks".

So anyone who is going to come in here with their pseudo-intelligence hat on and commenting about Hamas' "terrorist" activities or thePalestinians being terrorist and that it's all their fault for their predicament, should do some reading before talking and thinking wouldn't hurteither. Of course their gov't is corrupt, exactly how the US wants it to be by buying out the leaders.
