HDMI cable?

got a question for you TV heads. i got an lcd and ive had it for awhile and got HD programming. ive been thinking about getting an HDMI cable for awhile. howdo i know what to buy? do i just hook it up and im done? and what does it do? im a newb with this but ive heard people saying its a must get.
