This reminds me of when Brian Roberts was leading the league or near the top in home runs, slugging percentage, and RBI for the first couple months of the season a few years back

Anyone remember how infinitely bad Mike Maroth was in that season 4-5 years ago for Detroit? Statistically the worst season for a starting pitcher of all time or something.

I remember Chris Shelton coming out of nowhere only to quickly fade soon after. I was on baseball-reference.com and saw Maroth had a 9-21 season in 03'. Another interesting fact is that Maroth led the team in wins that year as they only went 43-119 http://www.baseball-refer...com/teams/DET/2003.shtml

Yeah.. when Cust got his first real opportunity for major league ABs, the 28-year-old made the most of it. A week after his May 6 call-up, Cust was already leading Oakland in HRs thanks to 6 HR in his first 7 games.
Coming off an injury that caused Joe Mauer to miss the first month of the 2009 season, he needed only 1 week to adjust before unleashing the onslaught that started "Mauer Power" - 10 HR in 17 games. It struck again in August when Mauer hit 7 HR over an 11 game stretch.
In 2007, A-Rod hit 14 HR in his first 18 games. Nobody else had more than 7 HR through Apr 23.
In 2006 (the same year Chris Shelton was goin nuts), Albert Pujols hit 10 HR in his first 14 games and 25 HR in his first 49 games.
In 2004, Steve Finley got off to a slow start, hitting only 1 HR in his first 19 games. But he caught fire and hit 10 HR in his next 13 games. The 39-year-old was leading the league in HR into June that year.
In 2001, Luis Gonzalez hit 9 HR in his first 10 games. It amazes me that some people believe Gonzo didn't take PEDs. He fails the eye test (before and after over a short period of time) and clubhouse test.. the early 90s Astros (Caminiti, Bagwell, Gonzo) are right up there with the late 90s Rangers and early 2000s Yankees. It's more common sense than a witch hunt.
Speaking of PED use, Barry Bonds opened the 2002 season with back-to-back 2 HR games after his record-breaking 2001 season.

Maroth didn't pitched that bad the year he went 9-21. His poor record was mostly because the Tigers were 43-119 in 2003 Accounting for 21% of your team's wins is actually very good for a starting pitcher. Maroth's 5.73 ERA that year was extremely inflated by the Detroit defense having very poor range and bad luck overall. His expected ERA independent of fielding (xFIP) was 4.62 in 2003. That's more in line with the rest of his career... Maroth had a 4.48 ERA over the course of his other 4 seasons with the Tigers before injuries did him in. Not great by any means but very respectable in the AL.
Here's a list of some of the worst seasons by starting pitchers (who lasted most of the season) in recent memory.
Aaron Sele (LAA) in 2003: 7-11 in 25 starts, 5.77 ERA, 5.78 xFIP
Jeremy Sowers (CLE) in 2009: 6-11 in 22 starts, 5.25 ERA, 5.56 xFIP
Jason Marquis (STL) in 2006: 14-16 in 33 starts, 6.02 ERA, 5.50 xFIP
Scott Kazmir (LAA) in 2010: 9-15 in 28 starts, 5.94 ERA, 5.42 xFIP
Ryan Vogelsong (PIT) in 2004: 6-13 in 26 starts, 6.50 ERA, 5.38 xFIP
Jose Lima (KCR) in 2005: 5-16 in 32 starts, 6.99 ERA, 5.36 xFIP
Adam Eaton (PHI) in 2007: 10-10 in 30 starts, 6.29 ERA, 5.31 xFIP
