Yoo NT

I have a heavy workload this semester and I live in a noisy *** 2 family crib.

Living description in spoiler :lol :

Sister's family is on one floor with 3 young kids and a dog. There's no office area. I have to wait for everyone to sleep to work off a greasy dinner table. And even then sometimes my mom will stay up watching tv or my brother will decide that he wants to come out of nowhere, turn on the tv, and chill with me even though he knows I have to be up early in the AM. So I need a way to turn my bedroom into a good work space.

I want to turn my bedroom into an ideal study area. I was wondering if anyone's done something like this or knows of

Headphones or anything to block out noise
A decent but inexpensive folding desk/table
If certain chairs are better to work out of. And if so which to cop.

If anyone can think of anything else too let me know, and thanks gaiz.

Edit: and I already go to the library on campus and around my way, but there are times where I prefer/need to work out of home.

How much are you looking to spend, total?

Noise canceling headphones will run $100-$500 (depends on brand)

A small desk/chair combo can be purchased from IKEA for $100 or so

I'd also invest in a lock for your door. Its cool if you and your brother are close and he wants to chill oocasionally, but you need to set some boundaries with him around your workload and him distracting you. A lock may be a good investment.

A desk and chair can be had from walmart for under a hundred or scavenge CL. Depending on where you live a desk and chair could be had for free I know I could see them on the sidewalk all the time in NYC (certain rich parts on garbage day) or ppl giving them away on CL.

A lock for your door is a good suggestion and a do not disturb studying sign for your door. Then some noise cancelling headphones and Spotify can be clutch.

Also a little hoop with a ball, some free weights .. self made dart board or a nerf gun .. is also a good change of pace distraction, so you could stay active while chewing on what you are studying.

Yeah get a desk and a comfortable chair, not too comfortable that it induces sleepiness and make sure your desk faces a wall and not the television etc. If you can, I'd suggest not even having a TV in your room at all to avoid distraction.

Pick up a pack of ear plugs (Amazon product ASIN B0036231TG) I use these, and they're really good

I also find that having a clean, pleasant scented and well lit study area helps me as well. good luck

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll let you know what I wind up doing. And any more from other NTers would definitely be appreciated too.

I definitely like the idea of adding more lighting. Since my room is dim. As far as the tv, I have a 50" on my wall which is the centerpiece of my room. That along with the consoles and cable box aren't going anywhere :lol but I'm disciplined enough to not get distracted by it.

I think I'm probably going to try those earplugs too, I wanna keep it in a budget or I'd do the earplug+noise canceling headphones combo. Going to tell my sis who's a master at finding CL bargains to try finding me a desk and a chair. The one I have in my room right now is a leather one for desktops but it's too comfy and slightly reclines. Too lounging.

Go steal a shopping cart from your local supermarket, turn it over and you got your desk.
