It looks like there is a damn good deal right now on flights to Newark and it looks like this deal works for SNA (John Wayne Airport). I dont know if its too much of a hassle for you to fly out of SNA instead of LAX, but you might be able to get a good deal.

I've flown into Newark before when going to the city, and its not bad at all. In some cases, I actually prefer this rather than flying into JFK (never flew into La Guardia). Assuming you are carrying fairly light (backpack + carry on or something) its actually very convenient. You can hop a train from the Newark airport right into Grand Central and then you are good to go.

i prefer newark over jfk as well but la guardia is the most convinent for me, from where im at in the city.
