Hosting a Party?

Is it rude to tell your guests to bring food and drinks if you are hosting a party at your house? I mean like what is the point of having the party then? I have a friend that hits me up yesterday like ya come through tomorrow for my BBQ at my house so i'm like ok cool. He texted me today like are you going to the crib? I reply yes ill be there and then 5 minutes later replied can you bring ice and beer? I am already disgusted at that point that he would even ask me. Sometimes I bring beer to my friends parties but they don't demand me to bring something they just want me to go to the party and if i bring something cool if I don't then its cool too but this other friend is different. I feel like they are taking advantage. Like we would go to the bar and hes like get a round of beer and ill get the next one and i end up getting the beer and he doesnt get the next round. Im already thinking of excuses to say nah im not going. Anyway do your friends asks you to bring food and drinks to a party they are hosting?

which implies that if you want something else, then bring it.


When i go to a party, i always bring alcohol though.

As a host, you shouldn't request certain things from your guests.

If you're going to someone's party, always bring something (6-pack, bottle of wine, Popeyes spicy chicken strips, etc.).

It seems people mistake these type of events.

I had a homie/homegirl that threw a house warming party. The crew was like cool, we'll be there.

Then they put us in a big *** group text of what was needed. From beverages, plastic plates, forks/spoons, main dish....ect.

Unless it's mutually understood that it's a potluck, I don't expect you to bring anything, but I appreciate it if you do.


If there's something that we need and you're not here yet, I'll ask you if you can stop by the store on the way over.


I usually supply the major things anyway - meats, salads, beverages, plates, and utensils.

If we're going to a party we offer to bring something, and if the hosts say that's unnecessary then we bring wine or liquor anyways - it's just common courtesy imo. I'm married and old though, so the parties we go to are probably a little different.

If you asked the host "if there is anything you can do/bring?" then of course it's OK if the host asks you to bring something they may have forgotten to get.

Not sure how someone has a party and doesn't have ice/beer? Seems to me, that should have been the first thing purchased for the event....

I remember my boy said he was having a BBQ and asked me to bring chicken. So I bring like $30-40 worth of chicken breasts and thighs. Get there and all dude had was 2 pre portioned pieces of salmon (like you get at the seafood counter) and like 10 steak tips. His girl made a batch of Kraft Mac n Cheese. I was absolutely mind blown to the point of anger.

Moral of the story: if you're having a party or BBQ, it's okay to ask people to bring dishes, but you damn well better have done the bulk of the cooking and not just provided your spot as your only contribution.

yep same thing happen to me and with the same friend thats hosting the BBQ today... he hits me up while im at work and asks if i want to go to the crib and chill... and then was like bring some beer... i get there and its just him and his boy over with no drinks or food so i bring the beer which was all he had at the crib... i was thinking to myself like damb you just wanted me to go to the crib not to chill but just so i can provide beer yall can drink

The most I've been asked to bring is whatever liquor I'm drinking usually remy or Henny, which mostly of the crew doesn't like/drink and they usually have very rarely do they run out. Never had someone not family related say bring forks or Pepsi etc.
