Is it better to make a reservation through the hotel itself or make it with expedia or hotwire, etc???

Priceline.com name your own price or hotwire.com "hidden" deals where they give you the star level and area but don't tell you which hotel it is (though it's easy to figure it out if it does matter to you) until you book. I stayed in a 209$ Fairfield Inn (199$ on their own site) in Queens for 40$, the ATL Airport Hilton in a Junior suite for 45$ and that's normally 120$, and I've used it in Chicago, Orlanda, and Miami. I recommend it for flights too. I've undoubtedly saved 1000s over the published price in the last couple yrs using that feature. There's even a site http://bidfortravel.yuku.com that is a Yuku bord so you don't even have to sign up to use it dedicated to travel tips.
It adds up quick, don't waste 100s of dollars to just sleep there for 6-8hrs and eat breakfast, chances are you are going to be out and about most of the day. As long as it's clean and safe, I'm fine. Also, star level is a good general indicator of how nice a place is but not the end all be all because it's based on amenities (i.e indoor pool/outdoor pool, restaurant= more stars than just an indoor pool) and not how nice or clean a place is. Some low star chains like Microtel and Deluxe Suites I think it's called are low star levels but more than nice enough for me. The one in Dallas even had a full kitchenette, seperate pullout couch and living room, 2 flatscreens and was like 50$ I use Days Inn Harry Hines in Dallas too.

^ how do you figure that out? I use priceline pretty often I'd like to know before hand where I'd be staying.

You're picking the neighborhood/zone in addition to the city, so it's not like you're going to end up in NYC but 20 miles out of the way on the opposite side of town from the Statue of Liberty where you wanted to go or anything. The zones keep you pretty precise, I think they're like 5 sq miles or so. Like I mentioned my trip to Queens, (that's when I went to Laguardia to hoop with Fresh, Los, Henzo'n'em), I chose NYC>Queens>Long Island City so it was obvious by the search prior that if I got accepted, I would be on this street in 1 of only like 3 hotels in that area.
Well it lets you pick the price andarea, say you're doing Atlanta and you select "Airport North," for your neighborhood and you want 4stars. When the results come up and it gives you the chance to accept or not it shows you a grid on google maps, open another tab and search the area you selected and are deliberating on so search ATL Airport North, 4 star, look at all the 4stars in Airport North and compare the maps it shows you on the results page.

While it allows you to extend for as many nights at the same price after accepted, it doesn't make a link where you can get another room but I put in the same details everytime and got my mom one and another one for my sister, then we extended night by night throughout the entire Family Reunion weekend
