True, you can't teach speed but everyone can get a little faster. Lose weight. Train your legs (squats, deadlifts, calf raises, etc.) Run. Improve runningtechniqwue. Everyone's ceiling is different. Just don't get mad if you're not doing 5 min miles lol.

Wait, youve always been a distance runner whos trying to get faster? Like short distances faster??

ya i want to be able to sprint faster because after getting more serious in basketball i can barely keep up with people who drive if it wasnt formy height and my shot i would be a bum in ball (6,2 145) yes im really skinny just need that extra speed for fast breaks and guarding

Run sprints, run hills (steep but short and at a fast speed), do plyometrics among other things to do.

Oh and 6'2 145 pounds is ridiculous. Hitting the weight room will help you too. People don't go from average or slow speed to fast though unlessthey're cheating (in scenarios like this where the person is a runner but the slow twitch variety). You can go from average to above average with theproper work.

Build your leg strength up in the weight room and do overspeed training.

Dont do it. It may mess up your knees. Every weight training like that should be done with the weight put above your waistline, so thats why theymake those weighted jackets.

Also for basketball you need to be quick, but as important is your change of direction and reaction time. Thats why you should practice stuff like runningsuicides, and exploding off the dribble when you go around cones and things like that.

You can also check out some resistance band workouts on youtube, as that isometric workout is also good for making you faster.

A combination of sprints (10, 20, 30 meter and maybe 50 and 100m), weight lifting (work your whole body), running skills (foot striking, armspeed, work on yourfundamentals) and flexibility.

Do not run long distance running that is not good for speed. You should also add agility drills to your workouts and hurdle drills.

seriously do like 65% of you guys train for pick up basketball games...What sense does that make.

Seems like your lacking explosiveness.

You definitely need to get in the gym and work on your legs and core.

Do some sprints on a hill or stairs.

As people said you cant teach speed but u can make yourself faster.

Sounds like you have great stamina but little explosiveness you need to work on that being 6'2'' u must have a long stride so u dont have to be asfast as others to beat them to a spot you just need quicker reactions.

Suicides, sideline 17 and defensive slide drills will help with your basketball quickness just alot of sprint work and practice work those thighs n calfsbuttocks to those are the muscles u explode from.

For me I guess im lucky ive always had great stamina and explosiveness I can run any distance and still sprint finish but my legs have always been strong bigcalfs thighs and buttocks that is wat will kick and carry you overall.

Peace

I used to do forty 40 yard sprints. It helped me out a bit.
Not to thread jack but I also have a question pertaining to speed. I tore my ACL(in September) and I'm going to get surgery for it but right now I canbarely run. Are there any exercises which I can do that will help gain some strength in my leg and allow me to jog or gain some of my speed back?

just to be healthier, nothing wrong with that.

my problem is the opposite!!!

I am fast, I can run with the best, but long term Im soo outta breath.

Its nearly impossible to go from one to the other. If trained properly, youll be able to get a little bit faster, but dont expect crazy results.
