In terms of speaking, not hard at all. But reading and writing is STUPID

Due to the huge amounts of words/characters, the best way to learn it is to pick up the basics, then just jump right into conversations. Spend a lot of time with the speakers, and you'll get what they're trying to say. I'm much better at Cantonese, but the two languages are so similar that I can understand Mandarin. Chinese isn't a good language for picking up a textbook and reading. It's much better to just spend a lot of time with speakers.

As for me personally, I know English, Spanish, Cantonese and a little Mandarin. I'm trying to learn Portuguese then Italian (heard it was pretty easy if you know English/Spanish).

Ridiculously hard. However, with true effort there will always be results... I'd advise learning from an actual class though, because you'll need a lot of help with the four tones that are key to the language. Stuff like learning the characters can be done through self-study.
