I always remembered them with little clues

-Dakotas: rectangles on top of each other
-Nebraska: rectangle missing corner
-Michigan: mad water
-Wisconsin: mad water, but not as much
-Illinois-Indiana-Ohio: left to right alphabetical order and Ohio has a dip at the top

The south starts on the nc, tennessee & missouri line. Anything above it being considered the south makes absolutely no sense.
