I can not afford a macbook so I decided to buy a PC laptop. This laptop will be a gift to my girl. how much RAM and how big of a hard drive should I get? Ido not know much about computers. the use for this laptop is very casual (email, microsoft office, surf the internet, load music on I-tunes and load picturesfrom a Digital camera.) I know best buy has a toshiba for $329.99 and it has 2GB and 160GB hard drive. Will I need a bigger hard drive?

I figured the price of a netbook, its almost the same as a laptop, and with the laptop you get more memory and more RAM. thats why I am sticking with a laptopthan a netbook. any other feedback?

This. A Asus Seashell goes for 350 and buy extra 2 gig ram stick and install that add a harddive if you want and There you go. You'll be 420 in the hole

for 3-400$ you can get a 15 inch desktop replacement. just go pc by pc and see what's on sale. doesn't seem like she'll be very picky. 160gb ismore than enough unless you have over 100,000 mp3s or a lot of movies. 320gb and 500gb are cheap now too but don't spend obscene amounts of money just onthat.

thanks everyone, great ideas. so 160 GB is enough? because vista surprised me with how many GBs it uses. She takes a lot of pictures and has lots of music. Iam also considering Documents because she handles paperwork for her father.

I'd be surprised if Vista took up 15 gigs. To put it simply unless her father works for the CIA those documents fit in less than half a gig guaranteed.Unless she takes a 10 megapixel picture of everything she sees everyday then her pictures will never surpass 2-5 gigs, and unless she has downloaded every Bachand Beethoven symphony she'll never go past 50 gigs of music. I have 6,000 mp3s including some hour long comedy specials and I'm barely over 30 gigs.

When she gets into downloading movies or porn then you can worry about hard drive space. And even then you could always just get an external hard drive forunder $100 which is a great investment anyway. Anyway this should be moot cause there aren't many computers being sold anymore with under 250 gigs of spacecause they're so cheap.

thanks for the input infamousod....I was looking at the 160GB at best buy. What are your opinions on HP and toshiba?

well best buy has a toshiba with 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive for $299.99 I'll probably get her this one. Thanks for the help. If you have anymore feedbackplease tell me

make sure the processor is Intel Core 2 Duo (dual core). That will help with multitasking, so she can chat or look at pictures while burning a CD.
