When I say producer/rapper, I'm talking about the balance of artistry. In other words, Dr. Dre doesn't make the cut to me because he's never really been a self sustained rapper.

Just off the top of my head I would say:

1) Kanye West
2) Krayzie Bone
3) Q-Tip
4)J Dilla
5) Havoc(?)

I'm really not sure about the last spot, and I'm sure I'm leaving some obvious cats out but I'm trying to think off the top of my head. Who are your all-time favorites?

Like I been saying Quik is toooo underrated.
Quik>>>>Dre
Homey I've been saying the same thing for the longest. Some people let Dre's commercial success cloud their

judgement. Don't get me wrong, Dre is one of the best to do it, but people ALWAYS leave my man Quik out

when it comes to the production.

Any list that doesn't have DJ Quik on it is null and void.  Sorry folks.

And half the dudes listed here are mediocre as hell as rappers.  Pete Rock?  :lol   Dude is horrible at rapping and clearly doesn't even write his own bars.

No.

Pete Rock
Large Pro
Lord Finesse
Kanye
Q-Tip

Like I said, null and void.  I'd expect better from a producer, too.  Quik is arguably the first GOOD well known producer/rapper.  And I say "good" because while the production is accepted worldwide as excellent, it isn't like he's Rakim on the mic.  But he's well above Pete Rock (who I love) when it comes to the flows.  And he actually writes his own bars, which Pete has been known not to do.

I know we all have our preferences in music, but anyone telling me that Pete can flow is outta their damn mind.  I mean, just listen to dude on the mic!  He's choppy as hell and there is no flowing feeling to anything he says--you can almost envision him reading his lyrics off the sheet.  Pete's Soul Survivor album was/is DOPE.....because its Pete Rock.  But say it was someone spitting those struggle bars over someone else's production--nobody would've given that album the time of day.

Quik

Q-Tip

'Ye

JayDee

Havoc

Honorable Mention:  Evidence, RZA, Finesse, Beatnuts

C'mon son my steelo's tight
Cause by far I'm the best producer on the mic-Diamond D

Q-Tip

Large Professor

Lord Finesse

DJ Quik

I apologize if it nullifies my opinion but DJ Quik's music does NOTHING for me. It never has and it never will. Sorry. Large Pro was out before him too...not that it really matters.

I never claimed that Pete Rock was a stellar rapper either, It's just that his work on the beats MORE than makes up for his shortcomings on the mic. It's odd that you're poo pooing Pete's rhymes and then listed Dilla in the top 5. Their styles are VERY similar.

If Pete doesn't deserve a top spot because of his rhymes, WHAT IN GOD'S NAME are you doing listing Rza? :lol

I should slap myself for forgetting about Diamond D

great producer but even better rapper IMO
