I made this comment in another thread.  I think most of the people on Niketalk have a real hard time differentiating between a bandwagon fan and a casual fan.  People dont really understand the difference.

Obviously, people like us regular S&T posters are die hard sports fans.  There are a ton of people who arent die hard fans like us, but consider themselves casual fans.  Obviously, casual fans are going to be more interested and excited when their team is winning.  That doesnt mean those fans are bandwagon fans.  Bandwagon fans are people who have no connection to a team until they start winning, and then become a fan of that team (ex. a Bay Area basketball fan that started rooting for the Lakers because the Warriors werent good).

Right now, a lot of the Bay Area is extremely excited about the Giants doing well.  Sure, there are bandwagon fans in that mix, but most I feel should be categorized as casual fans.  Yet tons of NTers are claiming these are bandwagon fans.  That simply is not the case.  If you were to ask these people who are way more excited and into it now than normally, who their favorite team is, they would say the Giants.  Just because now they are more pumped than usual, doesnt mean they are bandwagon fans.  The same thing applies to 2007 Warriors fans.  The same thing with pre-Manny Dodger fans.

So NT, what are your thoughts?  Do you agree?

It's only annoying if they come out of nowhere and trash talk and it's like, "huh, I didn't even know you were even into football".

No, they were fans long before.
I'm not saying they werent fans.  Just that Los Angeles didnt have the level of Dodger pride and excitement before Manny.  I've been going to Dodger games regularly every year for almost a decade (I go to LA all the time to see family/friends).  There was NOT the level of excitement and fan pride before Manny got there.  Sorry.  You are wrong.

I agree 100%. Except for South Florida fans. You have your die hards and then you have bandwagon fans.

Casual fan, for me anyways, isn't somebody whose interest spikes when their team is in the playoffs or doing really well.

As much as I hate to admit it I have to agree with this statement. This tends to apply a lot with college football, earlier this decade when Miami and FSU were dominant no one paid any attention to the Gators unless they attended the school, low and behold when the Canes and the Noles fell from national prominence and the Gators started winning titles "fans" down here traded in their orange and scarlet jerseys for blue ones.

Right.  But those people arent jumping on a bandwagon.  Which is what most of NT doesnt understand.

i don't really agree OP....if they're cheering now, where were they before? That's not a fan...casual or die hard...i don't care where you're from.

But lets clarify the term casual fan....i think a casual fan is one who follows the team to a lesser extent compared to a die hard fan, like they know how the team's doing, they know their record and a few players here and there....but they don't KNOW. They don't know much about the team....you spark up an argument, and they don't know what to say....but they still have a grasp on what's going on.

For me, a casual fan is just somebody that doesn't live and die by all this... You're not hanging on every pitch, snap, shot, whatever...

Maybe it's just me, but casual sports fans aren't posting on message boards.

I have no problem with casual fans... I see casual fans as someone who'll check score from time to time, watch games here & there, keep up occasionally on that teams news, etc.

Bandwagon fans on the other hand...
