my company is forcing all internal staff to use 1 day of PTO next week so they can continue to pay the employees that arent working due to the shutdown

I’m lost, they aren’t working but they’re getting paid still since the shutdown (a whole month now)? People getting back pay (can’t even call it that if they’re getting paid the same time still) for not doing nothing while y’all are still working is ridiculous.
And how does using a PTO day result in paying them since the internal staff should still be getting paid regardless of working or using PTO (unless you mean LWOP which brings on a different set of questions)?

Exactly what you said. It literally makes no sense and I don't even get it.
They're not getting paid from the feds but the company has been paying them for the past 4 weeks out of the company's own pocket.
Well now the company wants to use internal staff's pto to pay for the contractors paycheck next week.
Its absolutely ridiculous

That must functionally be an internship or something.
State minimum wage is $16.50 and its $20 for carve-out groups like fast food workers.

I don't know how people live in some of these wild expensive cities on some of these salaries. Especially now that they don't want programs to help out there.

It sounds entry level but demanding with that flexibility bullet point:
- Passion for technology and a proven ability to learn new systems quickly; prior experience with tools such as XDS receivers, Comrex, SAS routers, Wheatstone systems, Adobe Audition and NextGen is a plus but not required
- Intermediate level skills in data gathering and analysis
- Experience with the following technologies is a plus: Windows operating systems, remote access applications (VNC, Remote Desktop, Team Viewer, etc.), network technologies, system security, cloud technologies and network monitoring tools
- Solid understanding of web and mobile standards
- Flexibility to work in a 24/7–365 operation including off hour shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Formal education or experience in general technology is a plus
- Stress tolerance and detail orientation
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload being mindful of deadlines
