Installing a router

i can connect to the internet if i plug it to the modem, so my internet connection is fine. i remember when i first installed the linksys router i just changed the ip address for the router, but when i tried that it doesnt work. tried going on linksys site and couldnt find much help. does anyone know if i have to make changes to the actual modem before installing the router? any help or link to sites would be appreciated.

You need an IP address for that router

might start with a 9.xxx.xxxx (long time ago can't remember exacto)

Make sure the router is connected properly, to find out check what ip your network card is picking up when the router is connected. Right click Network and hit properties and select "change adapter settings" on the left side of the window. Just click on the local area connection and hit details. It should say the local ip its picking up.

Should be 192.168.x.x (the x can be 0,1 or 2) for consumer routers.

No you do not have to do anything with the modem aslong as its connected properly, seems like you just need to detect your host (which is your modem). Everything else in the router can be set as automatic.

To log on to the routers configuration enter the dns that the "local area connection shows" for example 192.168.1.1  .  You type this into your browser, if you just bought the router and haven't used it before it should have a factory user & pass. If not have your user and pass ready.

this is the part where im stuck, is when i go configure the router and trying to detect a host. i tried changing the ip address but i cant connect when i do that. btw, i have att dsl with a motorola 2210 modem, and a linksys wrt54gl router. i know for a fact it wasnt this hard the first time i installed a router. smh

Once you are in make sure it gets all info needed such as gateway, dns, etc....and make sure you SECURE IT.  Good luck

I had an issue installing one of my old routers at a friends house.

I reset the router to default settings and it solved the problem.

forgot to add....go to STATUS settings page and do:
DHCP release...then DHCP renew.  That will get you all the settings you need from your ISP.

Dont try to enter a IP manually make sure its set to automatic/DHCP. 

Also make sure your modem cable is connected to the WAN port of the router.

Dont try to enter a IP manually make sure its set to automatic/DHCP. 

Also make sure your modem cable is connected to the WAN port of the router.

some providers require a host/domain name for routers, without that the router may not pick up an ip
