Internet Speed Question

I have Verizon high speed DSL, with a 7 meg download speed. On speedtest.net i consistently clock in at about 6/6.5 megs which is stil ok for me.
Why is it that when i actually download things, i can never get higher than at max 800 kb/s?
I use sites like rapidshare/megaupload with premium memberships and pair them with download accelerators and i still cant even get to close to what my limitis.
Anyone know what the issue could be?
I use an apple airport router that broadcasts my wifi signal around the house (secure network so no one else is using my bandwidth).

b/c thats the max that they can upload to you

just like you have a download limit which is "7meg download speed; 6/6.5 megs" and you have an upload limit, which I don't know

they also have a download limit and they also have an upload limit... and they probably set limits b/c many people download from they're serverssimultaneously.

That's the theoretic peak throughput but its a bull +%%% number in most cases. Actually people are currently taking strides towards having the way internetspeed is measured and sold revamped.

basically this ...

most uploads are smaller so who ever your getting the files from they can only upload so much ...

Look up the difference between MegaBIT and MegaBYTE.

You have a 7 MegaBIT connection.

Its kinda more complicated than that though. The manufacturers of the HD report the space in different units than your computer uses. It reports Gigs in termsof 1000 MBs, while your computer prob uses binary units, where there are 1024 MBs for each GB. It gets more complicated than that, but thats the general idea.

That is my speed and it still takes 5 mins for a 10min youtube vid to load

Its not a big deal to me till you start getting around 1tb which is really 931 gb.

isnt a gb actually 1024 mb?

im basically trying to decide if i need to buy a new router. How else would i be able to make my internet connection speed faster, or at least be able todownload faster than i currently do? Before i only had 3 megs and id get 300 kb/s tops. Irecently jumped to 7 megs and now i get what i do. I was justwondering if the router that i have would be bottlenecking.
I was going to jump to another apple airport except it has a 5ghz signal with gigabit ethernet for when i use multiple devices (computers, game consoles, bluray player and a slingbox)

in my city is basically the best i can get (no FIOS, No U-Verse because Verizon is just sitting on the lines)
I could get cable but i heard that wasnt as reliable.

I feel you. I WISH we had FIOS so I didn't have to deal with comcast who has the fastest *%%! down here. Granted it treated me well when I had it.
