Will Interscope lose $25 million promotional bet on Lady Gaga 'ARTPOP' bomb?

November 16, 2013

Updated Information: Lady Gaga and Interscope are bragging about how "ARTPOP" hit number one in the UK. However, we have been told that the numbers are FAR lower than they were for her last album, "Born This Way." "ARTPOP" is expected to take an amazing tumble from the top next week in both the UK and US. It is already dropping like a brick on iTunes in several countries.

On Saturday, it was revealed that Interscope, Lady Gaga's label, has spent $25 million dollars to promote her flop album "ARTPOP," which is set to sell around 250 thousand copies in its first week -- that's a 75 percent drop from the first week album sales of "Born This Way" only two years ago. This weekend, plenty of Lady Gaga's little monsters prostituted themselves online, offering gay sex for people who buy at least 30 copies of "ARTPOP."

Some have compared the fate of "ARTPOP" to Michael Jackson's "Invincible," where $30 million was spent on the promotion for an album that didn't even launch one solid hit single. But "ARTPOP" is really Lady Gaga's "Glitter."

So, how was the money spent? We talked to a music industry analyst (who wants to be referred to as 'Jacob' for this story), who has worked at both Warner Brothers and Arista over the past twenty years. He works closely with people from Interscope and told us that the past year has been a huge nightmare for Lady Gaga and Interscope.

"She originally was going to have the album ready by last Christmas. They made her re-record it. When her tour wasn't selling, they invented a hip injury and told Gaga to go away for months so the public could be interested in her 'comeback.' After the lead single 'Applause' didn't get such a great reception, they made her re-record the album again. I hear that they allegedly paid radio stations in order to put the song at the top of their playlists," Jacob laughs.

Besides the alleged payola, it is believed that a lot of money could have went to news outlets such as Billboard, Glamour, MTV, ABC and some others. "Cash gifts to news outlets really aren't unheard of, but Gaga has taken it to new extremes if this happened. Articles by many news sources sound like they were completely written by Gaga's PR team." He notes that Rolling Stone, a magazine that had usually praised Lady Gaga in the past, allegedly wouldn't accept the cash. Gaga's team was hoping Rolling Stone would put her on the cover and call her "Woman of the Year." Instead, the "honor" went to Glamour.

"I can't say for sure what she is doing for Billboard, but they are definitely trying to save her. They let her song 'Dope' chart at number 8 this week based on YouTube views that weren't intended just for her. The magazine also counted thousands of free giveaways of the song for that chart position. They are covering up for her big time. It's really sad when an industry staple such as Billboard picks favorites and allegedly participates in the payola game," Jacob says with sadness.

Jacob believes Lady Gaga's current drug use is destroying her. "She has turned against everybody who has helped her. She claims she has only done Marijuana recently, but that's far from the truth. She's dying a slow death every day and nobody is there to help her!" claims Jacob, who has seen drugs destroy family members and all sorts of stars. Let's hope somebody loves Lady Gaga enough to get her clean.

more reason that these labels don't know what the hell they are doing, talk about a dud.

i really don't get it though, Em did well but he also got a loyal fanbase. guess Gaga's fans ain't buying her act anymore.

I read this yesterday and I don't believe this article. Maybe it's true but I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that a label would spend 25 million on a CD. Whether they invest 1 mil or 25 mil, I don't think there's gonna be much of a difference in sales and concerts. Most labels don't do this anymore because they know better, especially Interscope so this is interesting.

hmmm i dunno

i listened to her on howard stern the other day an yea man, music industry be on some BS i dont care what genre you of music you in.

Seen this coming a longtime ago, Her taking that year off from music effectively ended her career, By the time she got back people weren't checking for her anymore

Its like no one can leave well enough alone anymore.

Always this push to go up and forward at any cost. Its not for everyone.

There is the possibility Gaga has purposely tanked. Lord knows with the amount of leeches surrounding her id tank the second my bank account looked right.

Singing and dancing to computers aint that serious , I dont think she was headed for that rolling stones status anyway.

If a label spent that much, they are idiots

I don't believe in that 25 Million. Even worldwide.

I do believe they overspent and their return on investment will not look too hot when all's said and done.

Applause has done 1.7 Million downloads and it's charted well. So it's hardly a stiff. I'm sure they spent some money to push it along.

But much like they say about Rolling Stone, you just can't buy your way onto the top of every playlist. And it's even less likely to do so at the stations that really matter/sell records, i.e. the ones in the major markets. At least in the Pop world.

because her music's just not that good. JT took 5 years then 7 years off. Made a killing each time.

Drake being a rapper took 2012 off, just did features, came back and it was seamless. As a rapper

that could have been detrimental. But the music is just GOOD. Not gimmicky. Gaga was written off

as a gimmick + Born This Way was sold for .99. Another gimmick.

Pop market is bizarre right now. Katy album is sinking as well.

Oddly enough, it seems like as people question how strong Rap is right now, artists like Kendrick and Cole are outperforming some of the biggest Pop stars in the world.

Like someone else said, JT came back strong. But conversely, Rihanna seems to take zero breaks between projects.

Can't call it. Really may come down to the music not being strong enough.

as you typed that you KNEW it's because the music ain't strong enough.

as one of the few people in the Music section whose opinion i generally respect

I think you would agree when I say ANYONE can be successful in the industry

if they get a backing and the music is undeniable. Like JT, Suit & Tie was a hit no

matter how you slice it. Look at Trinidad on the other side of things. All Gold was a HIT

if he was able to crank out hits like that continuously he'd be good money, but he doesn't

have that skill...he caught lightening in a bottle. Gaga is a gimmick and after a while you have

to come with something more or people start to realize what's going on. The jig is up.

Once that cake video drop sales will sky rocket

Was about to say this.

Her first album was good and since then she's released garbage. You wouldn't be able to tell her fan base that though. "Applause" was terrible. It had a good hook, but that's where it ends.

And as someone said, had it not been for BTW being sold for .99 a pop, it would have tanked as well. The sales plummeted after the first week anyway.
