I just asked my great grandfather & he said it didn't go down like that. Don't get me wrong I thought he was doing it too but it wasn't.

What I think dudes grandfather meant was that Ip Man didn't stand up to no Japanese. He probably fled at the first sign of trouble. Movie is probably 90% fictionalized. Producers saw that he was Bruce Lee's Wing Chun master and tried to turn him into some kind of folk hero in the movie.
