Phil is a genius and if you think its easy to control the egos he has had you're crazy. #2 coach of all-time if you ask me.

I wanna say so but there's no way he didn't have anything to do with all those championships...at the same time it doesn't hurt to have the bestplayer in the league playing for you, twice

I know those rumors, but I waited and waited to hear what this illness was, never heard nothing.
There were whispers from within that he was frustrated with the team, the makeup, and called it good.
If he was truly truly sick, then I apologize for callin him out, but until I hear that fact, then he quit on us.

True, it could've been a way of bowing out but if I remember correctly, his health hadn't been 100% the preceding few years.
I don't know... without further info, all anyone can do is take it at face value.
That season clearly wasn't going well for L.A.

He had bladder cancer. Do some research before you call somebody out. Their record when he quit wasnt horrible they were 24-19. He's still aconsultant/scout for the Lakers. If he was being shady they would just let him leave and do a buyout or whatever.

I mean #!#%...dude knew how to get the best out of his players...micro-managinig the egos of Pip, Rodman, Shaq, Kobe, Mike, etc etc will not work with 99.9% of all coaches in the nba...some of yall make it seem like you could plug Lawrence Frank into Phil's role, and he'd have the same results. Phil is a master motivator...and for all of you questioning the way he does his X's & O's, how about him getting some credit for implementing the triangle (props also to Tex), and having that particular offense be dominant?
If you're going to question a legend like Phil being "overrated," then who's next??? Bill Russell? If guys like Phil can't win or get any sort of credit in the eyes of folks (here on NT), then no one will....

how can he be past his prime? he's a coach, not a player. so that statement is just stupid. you dont get dumber with time, you gain moreexperience. the triangle offense works, if it's executed the way it is drawn up. why would you change something that works? triangle offense is justresponding to what the other team does and making the best decisions to score points

Yes coaches can be past their prime. See Mike Ditka,Jimmy Johnson or Al Davis. They were past their coaching prime. They seemed to lose their edge.

Na I feel like he really is the same coach as he was with Chicago. I don't know if he is past his "prime"
Its all about how good the players the GM gives you. Its not like he costs the Lakers games....people just overrate the value of the head coach.

Overrated NO ...... but he is pass his prime, his hip problems has hobbled his sideline coaching quite a bit the last couple of seasons ... before he would"corner" players like Gasol and Odom and both intimidate and chew them out ... whereas these days he gets the "yeah uh huh" treatment, plushe doesn't have the depth or toughness in the frontline to simple pull these players like some else stated.

In all the Lakers and Bulls team that won championships Phil had enforcers that he could simply unleash, with limited young players to keep in place ......People seem to forget that the Lakers are still a young team, that seem to tune him out for stretches of the game

Can't be overrated when you have 9 NBA titles and have helped these players develop: MJ, Pip, Rodman, Kukoc, Kobe, Shaq. Never having a losing record orhaving a team finish worst than 3rd.
His coaching style instills a confidence in players and it is up to the players how they utilize his coach style. In the end its up to the player how theyrespond to coaching. And 15 season of 50+ wins says he's not overrated.
